Construction of Cryogen-Free 4.3T Superconducting Wiggler for NSLS-II Ring

With the 3 GeV electron beam energy for the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) ring, only superconducting wigglers (SCW) producing greater than 4T peak field can cover the photon energy range of 20 keV and 200 keV with sufficient number of photons. The High energy Engineering X-ray (HEX) Diffraction beamline, which is primarily funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and NSLS-II, will be equipped with a 1.2m-long SCW with 70 mm period length and 4.3 T on-axis field. This SCW is free from the use of liquid Helium and is cooled only with cryo-coolers. The Electron Beam Chamber (EBC) with vertical aperture of 8 mm is made from 316LN stainless steel and copper plating is applied both surface and +-12.5mm wide from the center in the inner surface. The expected heat load from the electron beam of the NSLS-II ring is estimated to be 10 W/m. Here, we describe the design principles and engineering challenges for the device.

SIX EPU Antiparallel Study: Estimating mechanical and magnetic performance of the distorted 3.5m EPU57 in antiparallel mode

The 3.5m long SIX EPU with 57 mm period shown schematically was manufactured to NSLS2 specification by Kyma of Italy. That specification called for operation to be limited to parallel mode. In parallel mode each of two diagonally opposing permanent magnet array quadrants drive in the same direction along its respective longitudinal axis by a half period relative to its adjacent fixed array quadrant. As such, at maximum shift the array pairs are only 180 degrees out of phase.

HEX 2-piece ID Absorber: Steady and Transient Thermal FEA

Radiation fans from Insertion Devices and Bending Magnets are “trimmed” by various water-cooled absorbers located strategically downstream of those sources. Mostly, the absorber surfaces onto which power is deposited are constructed from Glidcop Al-15 (rarely OFHC copper). On the basis of Tech Note 327 a re-design for improved thermal performance has evolved to a two-piece ID Absorber configuration; one between dipole chamber and quadrupole, another after the sextupole, each with reduced incident angle. The ring’s Active Interlock (AI) system protects against overheating by disabling mis-steered beam within an allotted time. SRP (Synchrotron Radiation Protection) protocol has a limiting maximum allowable temperature of 100*C at any point when subject to mis-steered beam for a fixed period before AI activation. After 0.2 msec, radiation exceeding +/- 0.5mm offset and +/- 0.25 mrad angular error from the HEX SCW will trip in fault. AI specification allows 1.0 msec to fully dump the electron beam.
