PIP-II High Beta 650 Prototype Cryomodule Assembly Experience and Related Design Optimization

After shipment to the Daresbury Lab and return to Fermilab, the prototype HB650 cryomodule underwent another phase of 2K RF testing to ascertain any performance issues that may have arisen from the transport of the cryomodule. While measurements taken at room temperature after the conclusion of shipment indicated that there were no negative impacts on cavity alignment, beamline vacuum, or cavity frequency, testing at 2K was required to validate other aspects such as tuner operation, cavity coupling, cryogenic system integrity, and cavity performance. Results of this latest round of limited 2K testing will be presented.

Installation, commissioning, and testing of the HB650 CM at PIP2IT

The Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) is a major upgrade to the Fermilab accelerator complex, featuring a new 800-MeV Superconducting Radio-Frequency (SRF) linear accelerator (LINAC) powering the accelerator complex to provide the world’s most intense high-energy neutrino beam. This paper describes the conversion of the PIP-II Injector Test Facility (PIP2IT) cryogenic system into a test stand for PIP-II High-Beta 650 MHz (HB650) cryomodules at Fermilab’s Cryomodule Test Facility (CMTF). A description of the associated mechanical, electrical, and controls modifications necessary for testing HB650 cryomodules are provided. The cooldown and warmup requirements, procedures and associated controls logic is described.

The Fermilab SSR1 and HB650 Synoptic and EPICS remote cryogenic control system

The 325MHz Single Spoke Resonator 1 (SSR1) Cryomodule (CM) has a 5.3-meter length, and it has 288-liter liquid helium @ 4.5K mode. The High Beta 650 MHz (HB650) CM contains six elliptical cavity cryomodules, has a 9.9-meter overall length and it has 530-liter liquid helium. The SSR1 and HB650 CM had been tested at Fermilab Cryomodule Test Facility (CMTF). Their cryogenic control system includes the Siemens Process Control System S7-400, Automation Direct DL205 PLC, and remote synoptic HMI/EPICS Phoebus GUI. This paper presents a method which has been successfully used by Fermilab PIP2 IT cryogenic remote on-line, real-time control systems.

An upgraded cryogenic test stand for HL-LHC cryo-assemblies

The Fermilab horizontal test stand previously used for testing the LHC inner triplet quadrupoles has been upgraded to test cryo-assemblies for the high-luminosity LHC upgrade (HL-LHC). The test requirements of these new cryo-assemblies required additional capabilities of the test stand cryogenic system, including controlled cool-down and warm-up, helium recovery after a quench, and operation at higher pressures. Most of these upgrades were completed to support a zero-magnet test in late 2020, with the remainder of the upgrades completed to support the first pre-series cryo-assembly test in early 2022. An overview of the design and initial operating experience of the upgraded test stand cryogenic system and associated process controls system are presented in this paper.
