Manufacturing techniques for Gravity Probe B gyroscopes

Additional and improved techniques for the manufacture of Gravity Probe B gyroscopes are reported. Improvements discussed include the redesign of the housings, new techniques for indentation of the electrode surfaces, and a new rotor ball lapping machine. These three items represent a significant improvement in operation of the gyroscope and also make possible the fabrication of a gyroscope which will meet flight requirements.

Manufacturing techniques for gyroscopes in gravity probe B

The design of the fused silica gyroscope configuration is presented. The first gyroscope was made for erection and spin tests only and does not contain the angle readout loops necessary for a functioning experimental gyroscope. The rotor ball described is not coated with the ultimate material, niobium, but instead with a sandwich of titanium, cooper, and titanium for spin-up test purposes. Background, historical information, manufacturing procedures, and sketches for this gyroscope are included to provide a better understanding of the device and the techniques and special tools required to manufacture a fused silica gyroscope to the required specifications.

Cardiotachometer displays heart rate on a beat-to-beat basis

Electronics for this system may be chosen so that complete calculation and display may be accomplished in a few milliseconds, far less than even the fastest heartbeat interval. Accuracy may be increased, if desired, by using higher-frequency timing oscillator, although this will require large capacity registers at increased cost.

Digital computing cardiotachometer

A tachometer is described which instantaneously measures heart rate. During the two intervals between three succeeding heart beats, the electronic system: (1) measures the interval by counting cycles from a fixed frequency source occurring between the two beats; and (2) computes heat rate during the interval between the next two beats by counting the number of times that the interval count must be counted to zero in order to equal a total count of sixty times (to convert to beats per minute) the frequency of the fixed frequency source.

Underwater space suit pressure control regulator

A device is reported for regulating the pneumatic pressure in a ventilated space suit relative to the pressure imposed on the suit when being worn by a person underwater to simulate space environment for testing and experimentation. A box unit located on the chest area of the suit comprises connections for suit air supply and return lines and carries a regulator valve that stabilizes the air pressure differential between the inside and outside of the suit. The valve and suit pressure is controlled by the suit occupant and the valve includes a mechanism for quickly dumping the suit pressure in case of emergency. Pressure monitoring and relief devices are also included in the box unit.

Process for making diamonds

A description is given of a device and process for making industrial diamonds. The device is composed of an exponential horn tapering from a large end to a small end, with a copper plate against the large end. A magnetic hammer abuts the copper plate. The copper plate and magnetic hammer function together to create a shock wave at the large end of the horn. As the wave propagates to the small end, the extreme pressure and temperature caused by the wave transforms the graphite, present in an anvil pocket at the small end, into diamonds.

EKG isolator

Light beam transmits heartbeat signal from electrodes on patient to electrocardiograph without exposing patient to possible severe electrical shock. System provides complete isolation between patient and EKG instrumentation.

Synthesis of diamonds

Shock wave transmitted through a solid exponential horn generates heat and pressure to convert part of a charge of graphite to diamonds. The shock wave is generated in the apparatus by a complex of magnetic fields and eddy currents.
