Numerical analysis of flow non-uniformity in the hot gas manifold of the Space Shuttle main engine

Three-dimensional viscous flow in a conceptual hot gas manifold (HGM) for the Space Shuttle Main Engine High Pressure Fuel Turbopump (SSME HPFTP) was numerically analyzed. A finite difference scheme was used to solve the Navier-Stokes equations. The exact geometry of the SSME HGM was modeled using boundary fitted curvilinear coordinates and the General Interpolants Method (GIM) code. Slight compressibility of the subsonic flow was modeled using a linearized equation of state with artificial compressibility. A time relaxation method was used to obtain a steady state solution. The feasibility and potential usefulness of computational methods in assisting the design of SSME components which involves the flow of fluids within complex geometrical shapes is demonstrated.

Hyperbolic/parabolic development for the GIM-STAR code

Flow fields in supersonic inlet configurations were computed using the eliptic GIM code on the STAR computer. Spillage flow under the lower cowl was calculated to be 33% of the incoming stream. The shock/boundary layer interaction on the upper propulsive surface was computed including separation. All shocks produced by the flow system were captured. Linearized block implicit (LBI) schemes were examined to determine their application to the GIM code. Pure explicit methods have stability limitations and fully implicit schemes are inherently inefficient; however, LBI schemes show promise as an effective compromise. A quasiparabolic version of the GIM code was developed using elastical parabolized Navier-Stokes methods combined with quasitime relaxation. This scheme is referred to as quasiparabolic although it applies equally well to hyperbolic supersonic inviscid flows. Second order windward differences are used in the marching coordinate and either explicit or linear block implicit time relaxation can be incorporated.

Computation of three-dimensional viscous flows with the Navier-Stokes equations

The paper presents computations of three-dimensional viscous flows generated with the General Interpolation Method/STAR code based on the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Calculations are presented for three viscous flow problems, and a two dimensional nozzle-exhaust shear flow case is solved and compared to an inviscid slip-line code. This nozzle-exhaust flow case is then extended to three dimensions and the steady solution displayed at pressure contours in the cross planes. The third problem consists of a simulated two-dimensional aircraft inlet flow which includes calculation of the 'spillage' flow and a shock wave/boundary layer interaction in the nozzle.

Incorporation of coupled nonequilibrium chemistry into a two-dimensional nozzle code (SEAGULL)

A two-dimensional multiple shock nozzle code (SEAGULL) was extended to include the effects of finite rate chemistry. The basic code that treats multiple shocks and contact surfaces was fully coupled with a generalized finite rate chemistry and vibrational energy exchange package. The modified code retains all of the original SEAGULL features plus the capability to treat chemical and vibrational nonequilibrium reactions. Any chemical and/or vibrational energy exchange mechanism can be handled as long as thermodynamic data and rate constants are available for all participating species.

Rocket exhaust plume computer program improvement. Volume 1: Summary: Method of characteristics nozzle and plume programs

A summary is presented of the various documents that discuss and describe the computer programs and analysis techniques which are available for rocket nozzle and exhaust plume calculations. The basic method of characteristics program is discussed, along with such auxiliary programs as the plume impingement program, the plot program and the thermochemical properties program.
