Comparison of in situ and remotely sensed ocean waves off Marineland, Florida

Comparison between X-band and L-band radar imagery of sea waves is made. Sea truth was obtained by in situ pitch-and-roll buoy measurements. Under the low wind and wave conditions of the tests, superior wave imagery and more useful Fourier transforms were obtained with X-band SAR as compared to L-band with equivalent signal-to-noise ratio and synthetic aperture resolution. A comparison between X-band wave images and the in situ measurements shows agreement in the dominant wave direction to within a few degrees. The normalized spectra show a striking resemblance in spectral shape.

Four channel simultaneous X-L band imaging SAR radar

Design considerations, construction, and testing of a four-channel microwave radar imaging system are described. Various components of the system are described in some detail including the receiver, transmitter, recorders, and the general timing circuitry. Results from flight tests of the system are described. The system is unique in that images from four microwave channels are provided and the data is obtained simultaneously. Energy is radiated at both 3 cm and 25 cm wavelengths; the four receiving channels are 3 cm, like and crossed polarization and 25 cm, like and crossed polarization.

Multispectral microwave imaging radar for remote sensing applications

A multispectral airborne microwave radar imaging system, capable of obtaining four images simultaneously is described. The system has been successfully demonstrated in several experiments and one example of results obtained, fresh water ice, is given. Consideration of the digitization of the imagery is given and an image digitizing system described briefly. Preliminary results of digitization experiments are included.
