Effects of material non-linearity on the residual stresses in a dendritic silicon crystal ribbon

Thermal stresses developed in a dendritic silicon crystal ribbon have been shown to cause plastic deformation and residual stresses in the ribbon. This paper presents an implementation of a numerical model proposed for thermoelastoplastic behavior of a material. The model has been used to study the effects of plasticity of silicon on the residual stresses. The material properties required to implement this model are all assumed, and the response of the material to the variations in these assumed parameters of the constitutive law and in the finite element mesh is investigated. The steady state growth process is observed to be periodic with nonzero residual stresses. Numerical difficulties are also encountered in the computer solution process, resulting in sharp jumps and large oscillations in the stress responses.

A numerical model for the thermo-elasto-plastic behaviour of a material

This paper presents a numerical model for the thermo-elasto-plastic behavior of an isotropic material. The model is based on the assumption that the yielding of the material obeys von Mises distortion energy theory and the material exhibits isotropic strain hardening. This unique model can be used both for isothermal and non-isothermal cases. The original formulation for the non-isothermal three-dimensional case has been specialized for plane stress conditions and the equations for the computation of warping and thickness change are provided. The finite element implementation of this model is also outlined.

A numerical simulation to verify the stress-free growth of silicon crystal ribbon

Thermal stresses developed during the growth of silicon crystal ribbon have been shown to be negligible, thus eliminating residual stresses and dislocations, if the temperature profile satisfies a second-order partial differential equation inside the ribbon. This has been numerically verified through a finite element model, an outline of which is presented here. This model shows that, for homogeneous isotropic material with temperature independent thermal expansion coefficients, thermal stresses will vanish if the temperature profile satisfies the Laplacian. A comparison of stresses due to uniform and nonuniform temperature gradients in the plane of the ribbon is also presented. The strategies employed to control the round-off error and to validate the computer model are discussed.

Generalization of rectangular element stiffness matrix and thermal load vector associated with a(0) + a(1)x + a(2)y + a(3)xy type interpolation rule

The stiffness-matrix formulation for the rectangular finite element described by Melosh (1963) and Weaver and Johnston (1984) is generalized to orthotropic materials with material axes not necessarily coincident with the x and y axes; i.e., the condition d(13) = d(23) = 0 is removed. Also included are explicit expressions for the element load vector associated with nonuniform temperature increase in the element. Applications to the analysis of thermal stresses in thin Si-crystal ribbons subjected to temperature changes with highly nonuniform lengthwise and transverse gradients (Utku et al., 1986) and to the simulation of the thermoviscoelastic behavior of growing Si ribbons (Utku and Ray, 1986) are indicated.
