Optical Error Budgeting Using Linearized Ray-Trace Models

The Root-Sum-Squared, or “RSS” wavefront error model is a simple, scalar tool, commonly used for space telescope error budgeting. At the same time, much more detailed models, combining ray-trace and Fourier optics with optical alignments and wavefront controls, can provide accurate, high -resolution simulations for detailed system and subsystem design. This paper makes a connection between the two modeling approaches by deriving RSS model coefficients from ray-trace models, including the effects of wavefront controls, for computing system performance from component error statistics. It is shown that, properly constructed, the simple RSS error budget is a covariance analysis, and can be as accurate as high-resolution wavefront models for statistical wavefront error prediction. A notional segmented-aperture space telescope is used to illustrate this error modeling process.

The Advanced Technology Large-Aperture Space Telescope (ATLAST) Technology Roadmap

We present the key technologies and capabilities that will enable a future, large-aperture ultravioletopticalinfrared (UVOIR) space observatory. These include starlight suppression systems, vibration isolation and control systems, lightweight mirror segments, detector systems, and mirror coatings. These capabilities will provide major advances over current and near-future observatories for sensitivity, angular resolution, and starlight suppression. The goals adopted in our study for the starlight suppression system are 10-10 contrast with an inner working angle of 40 milliarcsec and broad bandpass. We estimate that a vibration and isolation control system that achieves a total system vibration isolation of 140 dB for a vibration-isolated mass of 5000 kg is required to achieve the high wavefront error stability needed for exoplanet coronagraphy. Technology challenges for lightweight mirror segments include diffraction-limited optical quality and high wavefront error stability as well as low cost, low mass, and rapid fabrication. Key challenges for the detector systems include visible-blind, high quantum efficiency UV arrays, photon counting visible and NIR arrays for coronagraphic spectroscopy and starlight wavefront sensing and control, and detectors with deep full wells with low persistence and radiation tolerance to enable transit imaging and spectroscopy at all wavelengths. Finally, mirror coatings with high reflectivity ( 90), high uniformity ( 1) and low polarization ( 1) that are scalable to large diameter mirror substrates will be essential for ensuring that both high throughput UV observations and high contrast observations can be performed by the same observatory.

Segmented mirror coarse phasing with a dispersed fringe sensor: experiments on NGST's wavefront control testbed

A piston sensing and control algorithm for the segmented mirror coarse phasing using a dispersed fringe sensor (DFS) has been developed for Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) wavefront sensing and control. The DFS can detect residual piston errors as large as order of a depth-of-focus and can phase the segment mirrors with an accuracy less than 0.1 micron, which is within the capture range of the fine phasing for NGST. A series of experiments has been carried out on the NGST's Wavefront Control Testbed (WCT) to validate the modeling results, evaluate the DFS performance, and systematically explore the factors that affect the DFS performance. This paper reports the testbed results for several critical issues of DFS performance, including DFS dynamic range, accuracy, fringe visibility, and the effects of segment mirror aberrations.

Segmented mirror coarse phasing with white light interferometry: modeling and experiment on NGST's wavefront control testbed

A method of coarse phasing segmented mirrors using white light interferometry (WLI) has been developed for Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) wavefront sensing and control. Using the broadband point spread function (PSF) of the segmented mirrors taken during a segment piston scan, the WLI can accurately detect small residual piston errors. WLI does not rely on any extra optics and uses only the final imaging camera. With its high sensitivity to small segment piston error WLI can be used as a complementary phasing algorithm to the dispersed fringe sensor (DFS) for NGST. The paper will present the results from modeling and experiment on the NGST's Wavefront Control Testbed (WCT).
