Embedding Reverse Electron Transfer Between Stably Bare Cu Nanoparticles and Cation‐Vacancy CuWO 4

Cu nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted widespread attention in electronics, energy, and catalysis. However, conventionally synthesized Cu NPs face some challenges such as surface passivation and agglomeration in applications, which impairs their functionalities in the physicochemical properties. Here, the issues above by engineering an embedded interface of stably bare Cu NPs on the cation-vacancy CuWO 4 support is addressed, which induces the strong metal-support interactions and reverse electron transfer. Various atomic-scale analyses directly demonstrate the unique electronic structure of the embedded Cu NPs with negative charge and anion oxygen protective layer, which mitigates the typical degradation pathways such as oxidation in ambient air, high-temperature agglomeration, and CO poisoning adsorption. Kinetics and in situ spectroscopic studies unveil that the embedded electron-enriched Cu NPs follow the typical Eley-Rideal mechanism in CO oxidation, contrasting the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism on the traditional Cu NPs. This mechanistic shift is driven by the Coulombic repulsion in anion oxygen layer, enabling its direct reaction with gaseous CO to form the easily desorbed monodentate carbonate.

A substituent-dependent deep-blue pyrene-based chemosensor for trace nitroaniline sensing

Nitroaniline (NA) is a kind of high toxicity and pathogenic amine derivative, and the trace monitoring of nitroaniline has become an urgent problem in terms of both the environment and security. Herein, two K-region multiple substituted pyrene-based luminogens with reasonable photoluminescence efficiency and blue emission (408–430 nm) have been synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical properties were carefully investigated in solution and in the solid state by experimental and density functional theory (DFT) methods. It is worth mentioning that both of these π-electron rich and extended π-conjugated materials were used for the detection of electron deficient nitroaromatics (NACs) based on a photo-induced electron transfer (PET) mechanism, and a sensitive response towards NA, especially for p-NA with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 8.58 × 10 -9 M, was observed, with a fluorescence quenching efficiency up to 99.5%. In conclusion, these research results provided a low-cost and simple strategy for trace nitroaniline sensing.

K-region tetrasubstituted deep-blue pyrene-based luminogens: Visual detection of trace nitroaniline

In recent years, fluorescence sensors have been widely used in explosive detection due to their portability and high efficiency. Here, in the present work, two K-region tetrasubstituted deep-blue pyrene-based luminogens were designed and synthesized by introducing electron-donating groups. The optical properties were investigated by experimental and density functional theory (DFT) methods. Reasonable luminescence efficiency and electron rich characteristic allowed for the possible detection of nitro-explosives. Both luminogens, especially TFPy, exhibit a sensitive response towards nitroanilines (NA), with a limit of detection (LOD) for p-NA as low as 2.75 × 10 –8 M, which is mainly attributed to the electron-donating substituents on the periphery of the pyrene core and the extended π-conjugated structure. These research results establish a low-cost and simple strategy for the detection of trace nitroaniline.

Crystallization-induced emission enhancement of alkyl chain-dependent pyrene-based luminogens: Visual detection of nitro-explosives

In view of the widespread applications and urgent need for efficient blue emitting materials, the synthesis of such materials has seen renewed interest. In the present work, three alkyl chain-dependent blue emitting pyrene-based luminogens were synthesized and characterized. Here, the experimental results show that these luminogens exhibited high photoluminescence efficiency both in solution (>86%) and in the solid state (>35%). Interestingly, 1,3,6,8-tetrakis (pentylphenyl)pyrene (TPPy), as a photoelectric functional material, was endowed with higher quantum yield (72%) and competitiveness due to a remarkable crystallization-induced emission enhancement (CIEE) property. More importantly, TPPy exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity for ortho-nitroaniline (o-NA) with low limit of detection (9.99 × 10 -8 M), which is mainly due to the distinctive odd-even effects of the terminal alkyl chain. The results demonstrate that this type of luminogen can potentially be utilized for practical applications in the field of contaminant or explosive detection as a sensitive and portable fluorimeter.

Structure-controlled intramolecular charge transfer in asymmetric pyrene-based luminogens: synthesis, characterization and optical properties

Full-colour emitting materials have been widely studied driven by their promising potential application in fluorescence imaging and optoelectronic devices. In this paper, the synthesis and charactization of four asymmetric D–A type pyrene-based luminogens 2 is presented. Here, the experimental results revealed that this type of pyrene derivative possesses tunable optical properties by introducing D/A groups at the 1-, 3-positions and K-region (5-position) of the pyrene core. Wide emission bands from deep blue (429 nm) to yellow (567 nm) were obtained in different solutions or states. Combined with the theoretical calculations, this work provides an efficient strategy to develop pyrene-based full-colour photoelectric materials.

Engineering surface segregation of perovskite oxide through wet exsolution for CO catalytic oxidation

Cation segregation occurring near the surface or interfaces of solid catalysts plays an important role in catalytic reactions. Unfortunately, the native surface of perovskite oxides is dominated by passivated A-site segregation, which severely hampers the catalytic activity and durability of the system. To address this issue, we present a wet exsolution method to reconstruct surface segregation in perovskite cobalt oxide. Here, under reduction etching treatment of glycol solution, inert surface Sr segregation was transformed into active Co 3 O 4 segregation. By varying the reaction time, we achieved differing coverage of the active Co 3 O 4 segregation on the La 0.5 Sr 0.5 CoO 3-δ (LSCO) perovskite oxide surface. This study reveals that CO oxidation activity exhibits a volcano-shaped dependence on the coverage of Co 3 O 4 segregation at the surface of a perovskite cobalt oxide. Furthermore, we find that a suitable coverage of Co 3 O 4 segregation can dramatically improve the catalytic activity of the perovskite catalyst by enhancing interface interactions. Co K-edge, Co L-edge, and O K-edge X-ray absorption spectra confirm that the synergistic effect optimizes the covalence of the metal-oxygen bond at the surface and interface. This work not only contributes to the design of perovskite-type catalysts, but also provides important insight into the relationship between surface segregation and catalytic activity.

Allosteric binding properties of a 1,3-alternate thiacalix[4]arene-based receptor having phenylthiourea and 2-pyridylmethyl moieties on opposite faces

The synthesis of three new heteroditopic receptors (5a–c) which are based on thiacalix[4]arenes in the 1,3-alternate conformation is reported herein. These new receptors each have two thiourea moieties linking phenyl groups, two of which are substituted with electron-withdrawing groups at their para-positions, and at the opposite side of the thiacalix[4]arene cavity, with two 2-pyridylmethyl groups. One example (5a) was also characterized by X-ray crystallography. A limited 1 H-NMR and UV-vis anion complexation study was conducted. DFT computational determinations indicated that 5c, which has strongly electron-withdrawing NO 2 groups, had the most effective recognition ability towards the selected anions. The binding of Ag + at the 2-pyridyl moieties, and the binding of the anions at the two thiourea NH groups of the p-substituted phenylthioureido moieties, respectively, was also investigated. The appearance of a positive allosteric effect with receptor 5b was also found using 1 H-NMR titration experiments.

Pyrene-fused hexaarylbenzene luminogens: Synthesis, characterization, and aggregation-induced emission enhancement

Six novel pyrene-fused hexaarylbenzene derivatives (3a-f) were designed, synthesized, and characterized, which exhibited aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) in the aggregated state by means of THF/H 2 O mixtures. Techniques such as theoretical calculations, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and photophysical measurements in solution and in the solid state were employed to illustrate the tunable, variable, and sensitive AIEE features in this system. Both theoretical and experimental results revealed that the nature of the multiple photoluminescence should be taken into account when elucidating and designing the multiple photoluminescence phenomenon and molecules.

Lithium calix[4]arenes: structural studies and use in the ring opening polymerization of cyclic esters

We have structurally characterized a number of lithiated calix[4]arenes, where the bridge in the calix[4]arene is thia (–S–, L S H 4 ), sulfinyl (–SO–, L SO H 4 ), sulfonyl (–SO 2 –, L SO2 H 4 ), dimethyleneoxa (–CH 2 OCH 2 –, L COC H 4 ) or methylene (–CH 2 –, LH 4 ). In the case of L 4S H 4 , interaction with LiO t Bu led to the isolation of the complex [Li 8 (L 4S ) 2 (THF) 4 ]·5THF ( 1 ·5THF), whilst similar interaction of L 4SO H 4 led to the isolation of [Li 6 (L 4SO H) 2 (THF) 2 ]·5(THF) ( 2 ·5THF). Interestingly, the mixed sulfinyl/sulfonyl complexes [Li 8 (calix[4]arene(SO)(SO 2 )(SO 1.68 ) 2 ) 2 (THF) 6 ]·8(THF) ( 3 ·8THF) and [Li 5 Na(L SO/3SO2 H) 2 (THF) 5 ]·7.5(THF) ( 4 ·7.5(THF) have also been characterized. Interaction of LiO t Bu with L SO2 H 4 and L COC H 4 afforded [Li 5 L 4SO2 (OH)(THF) 4 ]·2THF ( 5 ·2THF) and [Li 6 (L COC ) 2 (HO t Bu) 2 ]·0.78THF·1.22hexane ( 6 ·0.78THF·1.22hexane), respectively. In the case of LH 4 , reaction with LiO t Bu in THF afforded a monoclinic polymorph [LH 2 Li 2 (thf)(OH 2 ) 2 ]·3THF ( 7 ·3THF) of a known triclinic form of the complex, whilst reaction of the de-butylated analogue of LH 4 , namely de-BuLH 4 , afforded a polymeric chain structure {[Li 5 (de-BuL)(OH)(NCMe) 3 ]·2MeCN} n ( 8 ·2MeCN). For comparative catalytic studies, the complex [Li 6 (L Pr ) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ]·hexane ( 9 hexane), where L Pr2 H 2 = 1,3-di- n -propyloxycalix[4]areneH 2 , was also prepared. The molecular crystal structures of 1–9 are reported, and their ability to act as catalysts for the ring opening (co-)/polymerization (ROP) of the cyclic esters ε-caprolactone, δ-valerolactone, and rac -lactide has been investigated. In most of the cases, complex 6 outperformed the other systems, allowing for higher conversions and/or greated polymer M n .

Manipulating Surface Termination of Perovskite Manganate for Oxygen Activation

For ABO 3 perovskite oxides, one of the key issues limiting their utilization in heterogeneous catalysis is the dominant presence of catalytically inactive A-site cations at the surface. The engineering of B-site terminated perovskites is considered as an effective method to address this issue, especially when dealing with Mn/Co-based perovskite catalysts. However, to date, such a strategy has not been fully successful and remains a major challenge in the field. Herein, a Mn-terminated La 0.45 Sr 0.45 MnO 3 (B-LSM) is successfully synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal method, in which low-valence Mn ions partially occupy the A site to form the active Mn-excess phase. Additionally, experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the presence of the surface Mn termination in B-LSM optimizes the hybrid orbitals of Mn 3d-O 2p and promotes the activation of surface lattice oxygen, where the pristine inert lattice O 2- is evolved into active and stable lattice O 2-x . Such structural optimization significantly reduces the activation energy barriers on going from O 2 ⁻ species to important intermediate O - species during O 2 activation. Moreover, this results in good stability and Pt-like activity for the B-LSM during CO oxidation. This work offers a new chemical route for the design of advanced perovskite-type oxides possessing novel functions.
