Earthdata Search UX Lessons Learned

Crafting a great user experience is hard. Crafting a great user experience for Earth science applications is fraught with challenges. From the variability in metadata to the experience profile of various users the possible permutations of use cases introduce layer upon layer of complexities that must be designed against. In this session, the Earthdata Search team would like to highlight lessons learned over the lifespan of the application the good, the bad, and the ugly.

End-to-End Solution for Data Customization with NASA's Earthdata Search

The goal of NASA's Earthdata Search End-to-End Services workflow is to take the pain and headache out of searching for data and getting that data back in a format that is usable with only that data that is relevant for you. For too long scientists have had to jump through endless hoops, use tools that only offer specific data or specific services, and perform any number of other non-science tasks just to get started on their actual project. Earthdata Search leverages the Common Metadata Repository's (CMR) newly implemented Unified Metadata Models for Services and Variables as well as a new service broker to expose and seamlessly integrate a collection's service capabilities and variables into an intuitive user interface. Using the new End-to-End Services workflow, scientists will be able to quickly see what data is available to be customized, what customization options are available, and actually perform those customizations on the data all within Earthdata Search, regardless of who the data provider is. This talk will demonstrate the simple workflow that will be available to end users and also give an overview covering how the workflow is enabled by the metadata stored within the CMR. Earthdata User Interface (EUI) Library

As more remote sensing data moves to the cloud, the design tools we use to build user experiences and visualizations need to change and adapt to make the best use this new data reality. EUI 2.0, the next major iteration of the Earthdata User Interface Library, aims to make creating rich user experiences around NASA's Earth Observation System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) data easy and user-friendly. Building on a solid framework of design components, EUI 2.0 will be open source and have off-the-shelf integration with the Common Metadata Repository (CMR), basic mapping and visualization tools, a refreshed design toolkit for building apps and websites that fit the Earthdata design theme and guidelines. EUI 2.0 will allow for the rapid development of websites and applications based on EOSDIS tools and data holdings. It will also make use of cloud data availability to enable data visualization and analysis without the need to download and sync data.

Earthdata Search Summer ESIP Usability Workshop

The Earthdata Search Client has undergone multiple rounds of usability testing during 2017 and the user feedback received has resulted in an enhanced user interface. This session will showcase the new Earthdata Search Client user interface and provide hands-on experience for participants to learn how to search, visualize and download data in the desired format.

Earthdata Search: Scaling, Assessing and Improving Relevancy

NASA's Earthdata Search (https:search.earthdata.nasa.gov) application allows users to search, discover, visualize, and access NASA and international interagency data about the Earth. As a client to NASA's Common Metadata Repository (CMR), its catalog of data collections grew 700 in late 2015. This massive expansion brought improved search and discovery to the forefront of the client's usability needs. During this talk, we will give a brief overview of the application, the challenges that arose during this period of growth, the metrics-driven way we addressed them, and the latest outcomes.

Making Interoperability Easier with NASA's Metadata Management Tool (MMT)

While the ISO-19115 collection level metadata format meets many users' needs for interoperable metadata, it can be cumbersome to create it correctly. Through the MMT's simple UI experience, metadata curators can create and edit collections which are compliant with ISO-19115 without full knowledge of the NASA Best Practices implementation of ISO-19115 format. Users are guided through the metadata creation process through a forms-based editor, complete with field information, validation hints and picklists. Once a record is completed, users can download the metadata in any of the supported formats with just 2 clicks.

Earthdata Search Client: Usability Review Process, Results, and Implemented Changes, Using Earthdata Search Client as a Case Study

User experience and visual design are greatly improved when usability testing is performed on a periodic basis. Design decisions should be tested by real users so that application owners can understand the effectiveness of each decision and identify areas for improvement. It is important that applications be tested not just once, but as a part of a continuing process that looks to build upon previous tests. NASA's Earthdata Search Client has undergone a usability study to ensure its users' needs are being met and that users understand how to use the tool efficiently and effectively. This poster will highlight the process followed for usability study, the results of the study, and what has been implemented in light of the results to improve the application's interface.

Earthdata Search Usability Study Process

User experience (UX) design is the process of enhancing user satisfaction by improving various aspects of the user's interaction with an application or website. One aspect of UX design is usability, or the extent to which an application can be used to to accomplish tasks efficiently, effectively, and with satisfaction. NASA's Earthdata Search Client recently underwent a focused usability testing project to measure usability and gain valuable user feedback and insights to increase usability for its end-users. This presentation focuses on the process by which the usability tests were administered and the lessons learned throughout the process.
