Energy & Materials Resource Flows

This poster presents on flows of resources that support manufacturing, including flows of energy and materials. It highlights the recent and current strategic analysis efforts such as energy and carbon footprints, case studies showing the interconnectedness between sectors and global perspective and competitiveness, NREL's Materials Flows through Industry (MFI) tool; and our big impact report on Sustainable Manufacturing and Circular Economy.

Sustainable and Circular Economy

This poster presents on case studies showing opportunities to recover critical materials through circularity and to address the end of life challenge for plastics. It shows examples of projects that are investigating the Circular Economy and helping understand each sectors unique challenges. It further lays out the methodology for the case studies that could be used for other industry assessments. Lastly, it demonstrates how the funded analysis tools can be used in conjunction with each other to answer both economic and environmental justice questions.

Supply Chain for Energy Technologies

Understanding manufacturing cost implications of technologies is critical to aid adoption of next-generation energy solutions. It is important to understand not only of the manufacturing costs and value-add along the supply chain, but also gain understanding of manufacturing location decisions. By identifying a technology's competitive strengths and weaknesses, analyses give researchers and program decision makers the data and insights needed to create strategies and plans that better promote U.S. economic growth and pursue R&D activities that have the greatest long-term potential to yield significant energy savings for U.S. consumers. In this talk, we present examples of analysis from a variety of energy technologies to demonstrate how manufacturing cost analysis can be used to answer specific policy or research questions. In addition, we present case studies showing the importance of understanding trade flow, manufacturing locations, and capacity and utilization to inform economic growth and potential for technology adoption.

NREL Supply Chain & Circular Economy Capabilities

NREL and JISEA have many supply chain competencies and capabilities. Utilizing these tools and with funding by the DOE Office of Science through the National Virtual Biotechnology Laboratory, a consortium of DOE national laboratories focused on response to COVID-19, provided by the Coronavirus CARES Act, an NREL team prepared case studies regarding necessary PPE to combat COVID.

Clean Energy Manufacturing: Renewable Energy Technology Benchmarks

The manufacturing of clean energy technologies has become a global enterprise. An analysis of four clean energy technology manufacturing processes—wind turbine components, crystalline silicon solar photovoltaic modules, light-duty vehicle lithium-ion battery cells, and light-emitting diodes—was conducted to provide a reference point for comparison over time as this sector evolves. The manufacturing supply chain analysis included processing of raw materials, making required subcomponents, and assembling final products, using benchmarks that crossed 12 economies: Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, South Korea, Republic of China (Taiwan), the United Kingdom, and the United States. Larger economies, with extensive manufacturing supply chains and high prevailing wages, tend to retain more value added from clean energy manufacturing than small economies. Manufacturing of clean energy technologies drives extensive trade among economies to support the widely distributed supply chain links. Production of wind turbine components and photovoltaic modules is more centralized than production of light-emitting diodes and lithium-ion battery cells. Across the four clean energy technologies evaluated, there was generally an excess of manufacturing capacity relative to global supply.
