A prototype Ka-/Ka-band dichroic plate with stepped rectangular apertures

A prototype five-layer Ka-/Ka-band dichroic plate was fabricated and measured. This dichroic plate was designed to pass Ka-band uplink (34.2-34.7 GHz) and to reflect Ka-band downlink (31.8-32.3 GHz) for dual-frequency operation in the Deep Space Network to support the future Cassini mission. The theoretical calculation and the experimental measurement of the reflected resonant frequencies were within 0.24 percent for circular polarization. The computer program, which was used to design the dichroic plate with stepped apertures, was then verified.

The electrical conductivities of the DSS-13 beam-waveguide antenna shroud material and other antenna reflector surface materials

A significant amount of noise temperature can potentially be generated by currently unknown dissipative losses in the beam waveguide (BWG) shroud. The amount of noise temperature contribution from this source is currently being studied. In conjunction with this study, electrical conductivity measurements were made on samples of the DSS-13 BWG shroud material at 8.420 GHz. The effective conductivities of unpainted and painted samples of the BWG shroud were measured to be 0.01 x 10(exp 7) and 0.0036 x 10(exp 7) mhos/m, respectively. This value may be compared with 5.66 x 10(exp 7) mhos/m for high conductivity copper.

The L-/C-band feed design for the DSS 14 70-meter antenna (Phobos mission)

A dual-frequency (1.668 and 5.01 GHz) feed was designed for the Deep Space Station (DSS) 14 70-m antenna to support the Soviet Phobos Mission. This antenna system was capable of supporting telemetry, two-way Doppler, and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). VLBI and two-way Doppler information on the Phobos spacecraft was acquired with this antenna in 1989.

RF performance of a proposed L-band antenna system

Scale model work to determine efficiencies and bandwidth were made on a smooth wall dual mode feedhorn to study the feasibility of its use at L-Band for the Venus Balloon Project. Measured feedhorn patterns were made and scattered from a symmetrical subreflector. A perturbation technique was then used to predict efficiencies due to scanning effects. A correction for the asymmetrical subreflector was also made. Tables of results and patterns are included.
