Features of relaxation modes in soft magnetic metallic glasses and their correlation with magnetic ordering

Although the anneal-induced relaxation process of Fe-based metallic glasses has been widely reported, there is a lack of a systematic description of the relaxation modes of atoms. Here, in this work, the relaxation modes of FeSiBPC metallic glasses and their relationship with magnetic ordering have been investigated. A two-stage relaxation behavior has been observed, and the pinning effect of Curie temperature is found in the first stage. The short-range ordering involved in the β relaxation in the first stage is confined and facilitated by magnetic ordering. It causes a smaller E β compared to that of non-magnetic metallic glasses. In the second stage, the pinning effect disappears. It is mainly the medium-range rearrangements involved in α relaxation that begins to yield the influence on magnetic ordering. This work uncovers the inner magnet-influenced β relaxation in Fe-based metallic glasses and provides insights into the interaction between structural arrangement during relaxation and magnetic ordering.

Towards extreme fast charging of 4.6V LiCoO 2 via mitigating high-voltage kinetic hindrance

High-voltage LiCoO 2 (LCO) is an attractive cathode for ultra-high energy density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in the 3C markets. However, the sluggish lithium-ion diffusion at high voltage significantly hampers its rate capability. Herein, combining experiments with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we demonstrate that the kinetic limitations can be mitigated by a facial Mg 2+ +Gd 3+ co-doping method. The as-prepared LCO shows significantly enhanced Li-ion diffusion mobility at high voltage, making more homogenous Li-ion de/intercalation at a high-rate charge/discharge process. The homogeneity enables the structural stability of LCO at a high-rate current density, inhibiting stress accumulation and irreversible phase transition. When used in combination with a Li metal anode, the doped LCO shows an extreme fast charging (XFC) capability, with a superior high capacity of 193.1 mAhg -1 even at the current density of 20C and high-rate capacity retention of 91.3% after 100 cycles at 5C. In conclusion, this work provides a new insight to prepare XFC high-voltage LCO cathode materials.

Engineering Atomic-to-Nano Scale Structural Homogeneity towards High Corrosion Resistance of Amorphous Magnesium-Based Alloys

Magnesium-based amorphous alloys have aroused broad interest in being applied in marine use due to their merits of lightweight and high strength. Yet, the poor corrosion resistance to chloride-containing seawater has hindered their practical applications. Herein, we propose a new strategy to improve the chloride corrosion resistance of amorphous Mg 65 Cu 15 Ag 10 Gd 10 alloys by engineering atomic-to-nano scale structural homogeneity, which is implemented by heating the material to the critical temperature of the liquid–liquid transition. By using various electrochemical, microscopic, and spectroscopic characterization methods, we reveal that the liquid–liquid transition can rearrange the local structural units in the amorphous structure, slightly decreasing the alloy structure’s homogeneity, accelerate the formation of protective passivation film, and, therefore, increase the corrosion resistance. Our study has demonstrated the strong coupling between an amorphous structure and corrosion behavior, which is available for optimizing corrosion-resistant alloys.

Optimal Microstructure of Silicon Monoxide as the Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Because of its metastable nature, silicon monoxide (SiO) consists of Si nanodomains in an amorphous matrix of SiO 2 . The microstructure of SiO, including SiO 2 , Si domains, and interphase (SiO x ) between domains, was modified via an annealing treatment in argon gas and thoroughly characterized by in-situ and ex-situ X-ray diffraction, pair distribution function, and electron energy loss spectroscopy. Two microstructure transformation routes were observed during the annealing process: (1) at a temperature of <800 °C, the annealing treatment was found to affect mainly the structural conformation of the amorphous SiO 2 matrix and the interphase, while (2) an annealing temperature of >800 °C led to significant Si nanodomain growth. Here, we found that the microstructure has a great impact on the electrochemical performance of SiO. The optimized microstructure of SiO appears to be achieved through annealing treatment at 800 °C or less, which results in interphase (SiO x ) reduction without causing significant Si domain growth. This work provides a deep insight into the domain and interphase transformation of SiO upon heat treatment. The improved understanding of the relationship between SiO microstructure and its electrochemical behavior will enable proper design and development of high-energy SiO for lithium-ion batteries.

Correlating hidden local structural distortion with antiferroelectric-ferroelectric transition in PbZrO 3 -based perovskites

Externally stimulated antiferroelectric-ferroelectric (AFE-FE) transition makes AFE materials attractive for many applications ranging from energy storage to sensing. This transition-mediated macroscopic electrical characteristics have been extensively investigated, yet the underlying structural evolution remains poorly understood. Herein, we study the local- and long-range structural evolutions in the Nb-doped Pb(Zr,Sn,Ti)O 3 perovskites by in-situ X-ray total scattering and diffraction, which show three different types of AFE-FE transitions. The evolution of long-range structure from diffraction and local structure identified by atomic pair distribution function (PDF) are consistent well with the phase transition behavior indicated by macroscopic polarization/strain measurements, while discrepancies exist. Interestingly, frequently employed long-range structure picture that the uniform AFE pseudo-tetragonal to FE rhombohedral transformation is insufficient to understand the distinct composition-dependent AFE-FE transition behaviours. Instead, the reversibility of this transition correlates with the chemically sensitive local atomic displacements revealed by newly developed in-situ PDF. The critical electric field of transition is associated with the local structural differences between the AFE and FE state. The macroscopic electrostrains can be well estimated by the phase transition associated lattice strain and domain alignment from in-situ synchrotron XRD data, while the local strains calculated from in-situ PDFs are found to be much lower. Finally, these results provide a fresh insight into the AFE-FE transition, and advance the understanding of structure-property relationships in AFE materials.

Enabling Extreme Fast-Charging: Challenges at the Cathode and Mitigation Strategies

We report charging lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) in 10 to 15 min via extreme fast-charging (XFC) is important for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Lately, the battery research community has focused on identifying XFC bottlenecks and determining novel design solutions. Like other LiB components, cathodes can present XFC bottlenecks, especially when considering long-term battery life. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a comprehensive understanding of how XFC conditions degrade LiB cathodes. The present article reviews relevant cathode-focused studies and summarizes the current understanding regarding cathode performance and aging issues under XFC conditions. Dominant aging modes and mechanisms are identified at different length-scales with electrochemical correlations for LiNi x Mn y Co z O 2 (NMC)-based cathodes. A range of electrochemical techniques and models provide key insights into cathode performance and life issues. A suite of multimodal and multiscale microscopy and X-ray techniques is surveyed to quantify chemical, structural, and crystallographic NMC-cathode degradation. Cathode cycle-life is scaled to equivalent EV miles to illustrate how cathode degradation translates to real-world scenarios and quantifies cathode-related bottlenecks that hinder XFC adoption. Finally, the article discusses several cathode cycle-life aging mitigation strategies with example case studies and identifies remaining challenges.
