Double-domed temperature-pressure phase diagram of CePd 3 S 4

CePd 3 S 4 exhibits interplay between ferromagnetism (FM), quadrupolar order, and the Kondo effect at low temperatures with a FM transition temperature that is much higher than the value expected from the de Gennes scaling of the heavier RPd 3 S 4 compounds. In this work, we investigated the electrical transport and magnetic properties of CePd 3 S 4 under pressure up through 12 GPa so as to better understand the interplay between electronic and magnetic phases in this material. Our findings show that the low pressure FM state is suddenly replaced by a new magnetically ordered phase that is most likely antiferromagnetic that spans from ~ 7 GPa to ~ 11 GPa. Whereas this could be described as an example of avoided quantum criticality, given that clear changes in resistance and Hall data are detected near 6.3 GPa for all temperatures below 300 K, it is also possible that the change in ground state is a response to a pressure induced change in structure. Furthermore, the lack of any discernible change in the pressure dependence of the room temperature unit cell parameter/volume across this whole pressure range suggests that this change in structure is either more subtle than could be detected by our measurements (i.e. development of weak, new wave vector) or the transition is electronic (such as a Lifshitz transition).

Effects of Co substitution on the structural and magnetic properties of Sr ( Ni 1 - x Co x ) 2 P 2

Although SrNi 2 P 2 adopts the common ThCr 2 Si 2 structure for T ≥ 325 K, being in an uncollapsed tetragonal state rather than a collapsed tetragonal version, it is a special case for the ThCr 2 Si 2 class: on cooling below 325 K it adopts a one-third collapsed orthorhombic phase where one out of every three P rows bonds across the Sr layers. On the other hand, SrCo 2 P 2 only exhibits the uncollapsed ThCr 2 Si 2 structure from room temperature down to 1.8 K. Regardless of their low-temperature structures, neither SrNi 2 P 2 nor SrCo 2 P 2 manifests magnetic transitions down to 50 mK and 2 K, respectively. In this work we report the effects of Co substitution in Sr(Ni 1 - x Co x ) 2 P 2 , which allows for tuning the transition between the one-third collapsed and the uncollapsed structure. We find a rapid decrease of the one-third collapsed structural transition temperature with increasing Co fraction, until reaching full suppression for x ≥ 0.1. Substitution levels in the range 0.11 ≤ x ≤ 0.58 show no signs of any transition down to 1.8 K in the magnetization or resistance measurements in the range 1.8 ≤ T ≤ 300 K. However, different magnetically ordered states emerge for x ≥ 0.65, and disappear for x ≥ 0.99, recovering the known paramagnetic properties of the parent compound SrCo 2 P 2 . Further, these results are summarized in a phase diagram, built upon the characterization by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent resistance, and field- and temperature-dependent magnetization measurements done on single crystals with different Co fraction. Both the magnetic and structural properties are compared to other systems with ThCr 2 Si 2 structure that exhibit magnetic ordering and collapsed tetragonal transitions. The magnetic ordering and moment formation are well described by Takahashi's spin fluctuation theory of itinerant electron magnetism.

Microscopic characterization of the magnetic properties of the itinerant antiferromagnet La 2 Ni 7 by La 139 NMR/NQR measurements

In this study, 139 La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements have been performed to investigate the magnetic properties of the itinerant magnet La 2 Ni 7 , which shows a series of antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transitions at T N1 = 61 K, T N2 = 56 K, and T N3 = 42 K under zero magnetic field. Two distinct La NMR signals were observed due to the two crystallographically inequivalent La sites in La 2 Ni 7 (La1 and La2 in the La 2 Ni 4 and the LaNi 5 subunits of the La 2 Ni 7 unit cell, respectively). From the 139 La NQR spectrum in the AFM state below T N3 , the AFM state was revealed to be a commensurate state where Ni-ordered moments align along the crystalline c axis. Owing to the two different La sites, we were able to estimate the average values of the Ni-ordered moments (0.09 – 0.10 μB / Ni and 0.17 μB / Ni around La1 and La2, respectively) from 139 La NMR spectrum measurements in the AFM state below T N3 , suggesting a nonuniform distribution of the Ni-ordered moments in the AFM state. In contrast, a more uniform distribution of the Ni-ordered moments in the saturated paramagnetic state induced by the application of high magnetic fields is observed. The temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization measured by the internal magnetic induction at the La2 site in the AFM state was reproduced by a local-moment model better than the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory for weak itinerant antiferromagnets. Given the small Ni-ordered moments in the magnetically ordered state, our results suggest that La 2 Ni 7 has characteristics of both itinerant nature and localized nature in its magnetism. With this in mind, it is noteworthy that the temperature dependence of nuclear spin-relaxation rates (1/T 1 ) in the paramagnetic state above T N1 measured at zero magnetic field can be explained qualitatively by both the SCR theory and the local-moment model.

Spin-density-wave order controlled by uniaxial stress in CeAuSb 2

We report the tetragonal heavy-fermion compound CeAuSb 2 (space group P4/nmm ) exhibits incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) order below T N ≈ 6.5 K with the propagation vector q A = (δ A , δ A , 1/2 ). The application of uniaxial stress along the [010] direction induces a sudden change in the resistivity ratio ρ a /ρ b at a compressive strain of ε ≈ - 0.5 %. Here we use neutron scattering to show that the uniaxial stress induces a first-order transition to a SDW state with a different propagation vector (0, δ B ,1/2) with δ B = 0.25.The magnetic structure of the new (B) phase consists of Ce layers with ordered moments alternating with layers with zero moment stacked along the c axis. The ordered layers have an up-up-down-down configuration along the b axis. This is an unusual situation in which the loss of spatial inversion in a metallic system is driven by the magnetic order. We argue that the change in SDW wave vector leads to Fermi-surface reconstruction and a concomitant change in the transport properties.

Weak itinerant magnetic phases of La 2 Ni 7

La 2 Ni 7 is an intermetallic compound that is thought to have itinerant magnetism with small moment (~0.15 µ B /Ni) ordering below 65 K. A recent study of single crystal samples by Ribeiro et. al. [Phys. Rev. B 105, 014412 (2022)] determined detailed anisotropic H-T phase diagrams and revealed three zero-field magnetic phase transitions at T 1 ~61.0 K, T 2 ~56.5 K, and T 3 ~42 K. In that study only the highest temperature phase is shown to have a clear ferromagnetic component. Here we present a single crystal neutron diffraction study determining the propagation vector and magnetic moment direction of the three magnetically ordered phases, two incommensurate and one commensurate, as a function of temperature. The higher temperature phases have similar, incommensurate propagation vectors, but with different ordered moment directions. At lower temperatures the magnetic order becomes commensurate with magnetic moments along the c direction as part of a first-order magnetic phase transition. In this study, we find that the low-temperature commensurate magnetic order is consistent with a proposal from earlier DFT calculations.

Small-moment antiferromagnetic ordering in single-crystalline La 2 Ni 7

Single crystals of La 2 Ni 7 have been grown out of a binary, La-Ni melt. Temperature dependent, zero magnetic field, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and low field magnetization measurements indicate that there is a series of antiferromagnetic phase transitions at T 1 = 61.0 ± 0.2 K, T 2 = 56.5 ± 0.2 K and T 3 = 42.2 ± 0.2 K. The three specific heat anomalies found at these temperatures qualitatively have very small entropy changes associated with them and the anisotropic M(H) data saturate at ~ 0.12 μ B /Ni; both observations strongly suggesting the AFM order is associated with very small, itinerant, moments. Anisotropic, H ||c and H ⟂c , ρ(H) and M(H) isotherms as well as constant field, ρ(T) and M(T) sweeps manifest signatures of multiple phase lines and result in HT phase diagrams that are clearly anisotropic. Analysis of M(T) and M(H) data allow for the identification of the two lower temperature magnetically ordered states as antiferromagnetically ordered, with the moments aligned along the crystallographic c-axis, and the higher temperature, T 2 < T < T 1 , state as having a finite ferromagnetic component. In addition, the metamagnetic transition at low temperatures, for H applied along the crystallographic c-axis (H ||c ) appears to be a near classic example of a spin-flop transition, resulting in a field stabilized antiferromagnetic state with the moments ordered perpendicular to the c-axis. Finally, although the small moment ordering, and existence of multiple phase transitions in field and temperature, suggesting an energetic proximity of these states, could foretell a degree of pressure sensitivity, our measurements of R(T) for applied pressures up to 2.0 GPa indicate that there is very little pressure dependence of T 1 , T 2 and T 3 .

Impact of nematicity on the relationship between antiferromagnetic fluctuations and superconductivity in FeSe 0.91 S 0.09 under pressure

The sulfur-substituted FeSe system, FeSe 1 - x S x , provides a versatile platform for studying the relationship among nematicity, antiferromagnetism, and superconductivity. Herein, by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and resistivity measurements up to 4.73 GPa on FeSe 0.91 S 0.09 , we established the pressure- ( p -) temperature ( T ) phase diagram in which the nematic state is suppressed with pressure showing a nematic quantum phase transition (QPT) around p = 0.5 GPa , two superconductivity (SC) regions separated by the QPT appear, and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase emerges above ~ 3.3 GPa . From the NMR results up to 2.1 GPa, AFM fluctuations are revealed to be characterized by the stripe-type wave vector which remains the same for the two SC regions. Furthermore, the electronic state is discovered to change in character from non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid around the nematic QPT and persists up to ~ 2.1 GPa . In addition, although the AFM fluctuations correlate with T c in both SC states, demonstrating the importance of the AFM fluctuations for the appearance of SC in the system, we found that, when nematic order is absent, T c is strongly correlated with the AFM fluctuations whereas T c weakly depends on the AFM fluctuations when nematic order is present. Our findings on FeSe 0.91 S 0.09 were shown to be applied to the whole FeSe 1 - x S x system and offer an insight into the relationship between AFM fluctuations and SC in Fe-based superconductors.
