A note on a Lagrangian formulation for motion about the collinear points

A Lagrangian formulation for the three-dimensional motion of a satellite in the vicinity of the collinear points of the circular-restricted problem is reconsidered. It is shown that the influence of the primaries can be expressed in the form of two third-body disturbing functions. By use of this approach, the equations for the Lagrangian and for the motion itself are readily developed into highly compact expressions. All orders of the non-linear developments are shown to be easily obtainable using well-known recursive relationships. The resulting forms for these equations are well suited for use in the initial phase of canonical or non-canonical investigations.

Analytic construction of periodic orbits about the collinear points

A third-order analytical solution for halo-type periodic motion about the collinear points of the circular-restricted problem is presented. The three-dimensional equations of motion are obtained by a Lagrangian formulation. The solution is constructed using the method of successive approximations in conjunction with a technique similar to the Lindstedt-Poincare method. The theory is applied to the sun-earth system.

An assessment of the risk arising from electrical effects associated with carbon fibers released from commercial aircraft fires

The risks associated with electrical effects arising from carbon fibers released from commercial aviation aircraft fires were estimated for 1993. The expected annual losses were estimated to be about $470 (1977 dollars) in 1993. The chances of total losses from electrical effects exceeding $100,000 (1977 dollars) in 1993 were established to be about one in ten thousand.

Mission design for a halo orbiter of the earth

The International Sun-Earth Explorer (ISEE) scientific satellite to be stationed in 1978 in the vicinity of the sun-earth interior libration point to continuously monitor the space between the sun and the earth, including the distant geomagnetic tail is described. Orbit selection considerations for the ISEE-C are discussed along with stationkeeping requirements and fuel-optimal trajectories. Due to the alignment of the interior libration point with the sun as viewed from the earth, it will be necessary to place the satellite into a 'halo orbit' around the libration point, in order to eliminate solar interference with down-link telemetry. Parametric data for transfer trajectories between an earth parking orbit (altitude about 185 km) and a libration-point orbit are presented. It is shown that the insertion magnitude required for placing a satellite into an acceptable halo orbit is rather modest.

Feasibility investigation of growing gallium arsenide single crystals in ribbon form

Polycrystalline GaAs ribbons have been grown in graphite boats by passage of a wide zone through B2O3 encapsulated feed stock, confined by a quartz cover plate. By controlling the heat flow in the graphite boat and controlling the zoning rate, large grained, single phase polycrystalline samples with directional solidification and good thickness control were achieved. Arsenic vaporization was effectively suppressed at the melting point of GaAs by the B2O3 moat and 3 atmospheres of pressure. A vertical constrained-zone-melting apparatus with a B2O3 moat seal, rf heating, and water cooling on the bottom will be used to control the heat flow and temperature patterns required for growth of single crystal ribbons.

A uniformly valid solution for motion about the interior libration point of the perturbed elliptic-restricted problem

Bounded motion about Lagrange collinear libration points is considered for a perturbed elliptic-restricted problem. A practical application is the motion of a satellite near a libration point collinear with the sun and the earth-moon barycenter. Such a system is treated here as an earth-sun-satellite elliptic restricted problem with lunar perturbations. The method of dual time scales is utilized to develop a uniformly valid three-dimensional analytical solution to the satellite's equations of motion. The analytical development applies somewhat generally to that class of four-body problems where the second primary mass is much greater than the first, and the third primary mass is much greater than the second.
