Two-tone intermodulation analysis of communication satellite transponders

Amplitudes of the in-band intermodulation products that arise when two equal-amplitude sinusoids are transmitted through a satellite transponder can be found from a linear transformation when the transponder characteristic is represented by a polynomial. Conversely, the nonlinearity that produces the intermodulation levels measured in a two-tone test can be found from the inverse transformation. As an application, the bandpass nonlinearity is deduced that gives rise to two-tone IM amplitudes that were measured during orbital tests of a satellite transponder, and compared with the measured bandpass characteristic.

Communication satellite ground station receiver performance at low data rates

Performance of satellite ground station receivers at low data rates is analyzed for power-limited satellites, when various amounts of frequency dynamics are present. Specifically, the lowest data rates for which the receiver can successfully demodulate suppressed-carrier BPSK data under a wide variety of conditions are determined. Minimum data rates on the order of 100 to 1400 bits per second are achievable with a bit error probability less than 0.00001 and with a mean time to cycle slip on the order of 1/2 hour or more, when Costas loops are employed for carrier extraction.

Performance of a communication satellite system in simulated RFI

Vulnerability of an advanced communication satellite system to pulsed RFI is examined. Results of an experimental simulation are compared with calculated system degradation. System performance in pulsed RFI is found to be quite good with well-designed ground receiving equipment.
