Astrophysics science operations in the Great Observatories era

Plans for Astrophysics science operations during the decade of the nineties are described from the point of view of a scientist who wishes to make a space-borne astronomical observation or to use archival astronomical data. 'Science Operations' include the following: proposal preparation, observation planning and execution, data collection, data processing and analysis, and dissemination of results. For each of these areas of science operations, we derive technology requirements for the next ten to twenty years. The scientist will be able to use a variety of services and infrastructure, including the 'Astrophysics Data System.' The current status and plans for these science operations services are described.

Astrophysics science operations - Near-term plans and vision

Astrophysics science operations planned by the Science Operations branch of NASA Astrophysics Division for the 1990s for the purpose of gathering spaceborne astronomical data are described. The paper describes the near-future plans of the Science Operations in the areas of the preparation of the proposal; the planning and execution of spaceborne observations; the collection, processing, and analysis data; and the dissemination of results. Also presented are concepts planned for introduction at the beginning of the 20th century, including the concepts of open communications, transparent instrument and observatory operations, a spiral requirements development method, and an automated research assistant.

Observations of supernova SN1987a

Supernova SN1987a was discovered on February 23, 1987, in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a nearby galaxy that is visible only from the Southern Hemisphere. The NASA program for observations of SN1987a, which was developed rapidly after the discovery of the explosion, was designed to be implemented through a series of coordinated campaigns of gamma-ray, X-ray, ultraviolet, and infrared observations from spacecraft, rockets, balloons, aircraft and the ground. The author summarizes models for supernovae, recent results for SN1987a, and the NASA plans for further observations.

NASA plans for observations of SN1987A

The NASA plans for observations of supernova SN1987A are described. The objective of the observing program is to obtain data across the full spectrum in order to develop a thorough understanding of the early postexplosion development of SN1987A. This objective is being implemented through a series of coordinated campaigns of gamma-ray, X-ray, ultraviolet and infrared observations from balloons, rockets and aircraft. Rocket-borne X-ray observations, in particular, are expected to obtain data which are not obtainable with existing orbiting instrumentation.

NASA plans for observations of SN1987A

The scientific aims and technological implementation of NASA observations of SN 1987A are outlined in a status report. Key questions to be answered involve nucleosynthesis and the light curves of type II SN; the multilayer structure of the progenitor and the SNR; circumstellar gas, shock-wave, and dust formation; and the evolution of the core remnant. Consideration is given to continued SMM, IUE, Voyager UVS, and DSN observations; future space missions such as GRO, AXAF, and Rosat; balloon-borne gamma-ray, rocket-borne X-ray, and airborne IR observations; and the Science Communications Network and Data Archive.
