Modeling a Hypothetical Fusion Blanket Design Using MELCOR-TMAP

MELCOR (not an acronym) is a nuclear safety code developed by Sandia National Laboratories for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Idaho National Laboratory collaborates with Sandia to maintain and develop a version of MELCOR specifically for fusion device applications. Most recently, the tritium migration analysis program (TMAP) has been incorporated into MELCOR for fusion, in a version called MELCOR-TMAP. We show the results applying MELCOR-TMAP to model steady-state inventory and tritium retention in a liquid immersion blanket design for a hypothetical fusion device under steady-state operation.

Constrained Tomographic Reconstructions of Gamma Scans in AGR 5/6/7 Capsules

We demonstrate a novel approach to locate potential areas of interest within individual capsules in the Advanced Gas Reactor 5/6/7 experiment. Individual capsules from the experiment have been scanned for gamma-emitting radioisotopes using the precision gamma spectrometer at Idaho National Laboratory’s hot fuel examination facility. Only a small number of scans were available, fewer than ten scan angles as opposed to a typical three hundred, so a geometry-informed algebraic reconstruction technique was used to provide qualitative information on high-activity regions in the capsule. While results are non-quantitative, some qualitative conclusions are drawn.

Systems Level Fuel Cycle Modeling in TMAP8 - A Demonstration

The tritium migration analysis program (TMAP) has been used for tritium inventory tracking and analysis for several years, and the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE)-based TMAP8 has several improvements over TMAP4 and TMAP7, such as support for multiple dimensions and non-cartesian coordinate systems, as well as interoperability with sub-apps at higher and lower length scales. We demonstrate that TMAP8 has the additional capacity to solve systems-level problems using zero-dimensional ordinary differential equations by reproducing a literature model which describes a systems-level fuel-cycle of tritium inventory in a hypothetical fusion power plant. The capacity to run several coupled multi-scale physics calculations as part of a single package will be necessary for accurate blanket and fuel-cycle design.

Modeling tritium inventory in hypothetical designs using MELCOR-TMAP

MELCOR-TMAP has been used to model tritium inventory in a hypothetical fusion device with a liquid immersion blanket. Parametric studies for steady-state operations due to material property uncertainties and extraction system limitations are shown, along with a flow-diagram of the model and a history of MELCOR-Fusion

Blanket Modeling with Tritium Accountancy using MELCOR-Fusion

Fusion devices require a "blanket" of materials that generate tritium during production to provide the source of tritium for the fusion device. We use MELCOR for fusion to demonstrate a blanket model of an ARC-class reactor with a liquid immersion blanket. We discuss major sources of uncertainty and describe ongoing experimental efforts to reduce the uncertainty.
