Aircraft sampling of the sulfate layer near the tropopause following the eruption of Mount St. Helens

Twenty filter sampling flights of the NASA Lewis F-106 aircraft were conducted in the Great Lakes region between June 4 and August 8, 1980, following the major eruption of Mount St. Helens, Washington on May 18. The IPC-1478 filters were exposed over an altitude range spanning the local tropopause. Quarter sections were analyzed for sulfate and nitrate by ion chromatography and selected samples were analyzed for chloride by selective ion electrode. Trace elements were searched by X-ray fluorescence analysis. A filter sample taken above the tropopause on June 5 indicated a sulfate level of 50 times the baseline measurements. Subsequent measurements over a period of 2 months showed an initial dropoff and formation of a persistent layer of sulfate above the tropopause with a concentration of 10 to 18 times previously measured background-levels. Concentrations of nitrate above the tropopause exhibited considerable variability and some enhancement compared with previously measured concentration levels. It is suggested that the source of the nitrate may also be volcanic as evidenced by its temporal relationship to the sulfate concentration changes. Based on the null results of X-ray fluorescence measurements, there is no evidence of ash particle concentrations greater than 3.4 microns g/cubic m persisting in the layer above the tropopause after the second transit of the cloud.

Aircraft sampling of the sulfate layer near the tropopause following the eruption of Mount St. Helens

Twenty-three filter sampling flights of the NASA Lewis F-106 aircraft, were conducted in the Great Lakes region between June 4 and Dec. 23, 1980, following the major eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18. The IPC-1478 filters were exposed over an altitude range spanning the local tropopause. A filter sample exposed above the tropopause on June 5 indicated a sulfate level 50 times the baseline measurements, which is consistent with the trajectory predictions of the leading edge of the cloud on its second transit around the earth. Subsequent measurements over a period of 7 months revealed the existence of a layer of sulfate above the tropopause that decayed to a level of about 4 times previously measured background levels by the beginning of August. Concentration of nitrate above the tropopause exhibited considerable variability and showed some enhancement compared with previously measured concentration levels. On the basis of the null results of X ray fluorescence measurements, there is no evidence of ash particle concentrations of greater than 3.4 microns/cu m persisting in the layer above the tropopause following the second transit of the cloud.

A preliminary area survey of neutron radiation levels associated with the NASA variable energy cyclotron horizontal neutron delivery system

The 25 MeV deuteron beam from the NASA variable energy cyclotron incident on a thick beryllium target will deliver a tissue neutron dose rate of 2.14 rad micron A-min at a source to skin distance of 125 cm. A neutron survey of the existing hallways with various shielding configurations made during operating of the horizontal neutron delivery system indicates that minimal amounts of additional neutron shielding material are required to provide a low level radiation environment within a self-contained neutron therapy control station. Measurements also indicate that the primary neutron distribution delivered by a planned vertical delivery system will be minimally perturbed by neutrons backscattered from the floor.

Reaction Li-6/p, pt/ at 590 MeV.

A lithium target enriched to 95.6 per cent of Li-6 and 0.685 cm thick was bombarded in the 590-MeV proton beam of a synchrocyclotron. Coincident events were detected in a double telescope arrangement. The characteristics of the unobserved three-nucleon residual system calculated for each event include the missing energy, the longitudinal recoil, and the transverse recoil. The cross-section data obtained indicate that zero recoil momentum for the unobserved three-nucleon recoil system is the most likely situation.

The reaction proton deuteron yields triton pion at 470 and 590 MeV

The preliminary results from a study of the deuteron (proton, positive pion)triton reaction are reported. The differential cross section for this reaction was measured for a number of center of mass angles from 37 deg to 160 deg at incident proton energies of 470 and 590 MeV. The cross sections measured at 590 MeV agree with predictions made considering a two-nucleon process. The 470 MeV data shows a peak in the backward direction which is not predicted by this mechanism.

Elastic pd scattering at 316, 364, 470, and 590 MeV in the backward hemisphere.

The elastic pd differential cross section at center-of-mass angles between 91 and 164 deg was determined for 316, 364, 470, and 590 MeV proton scattering in a backward hemisphere. For the three largest energies, the cross sections were within 10% of each other at any given angle larger than 130 deg. The extrapolated 180 deg differential cross section remained nearly constant from 316 to 590 MeV.

Elastic scattering of 600-MeV protons from H, D, He-3, and He-4.

Study of the elastic scattering of 600-MeV protons from light nuclei. Differential cross sections have been obtained for the scattering of protons from hydrogen, deuterium, helium-3, and helium-4. Polarization was measured for deuterium and He-4 nuclei. The p-p cross-section data are in excellent agreement with the predictions from the Livermore phase shifts. Small-angle p-D, p-He-3 elastic scattering data are compared with calculations based on the multiple-scattering theories of Watson and Glauber.

Backward elastic pd scattering at 316, 364, 470 and 590 MeV.

The elastic scattering of protons by deuterons in the backward hemisphere was studied at the NASA Space Radiation Effect Laboratory. Preliminary data resulting from this study, which include the proton laboratory scattering angle, the laboratory differential cross section, the proton center-of-mass scattering angle, and the center-of-mass differential cross section, are tabulated, given graphically, and analyzed.

Backward elastic pd scattering at 316, 364, 470 and 590 MeV

Preliminary results are reported from a part of the data obtained at the NASA Space Radiation Effect Laboratory for the elastic scattering of protons by deuterons in the backward hemisphere. The data is averaged over a proton angle interval which corresponds to the angular resolution on the correlation angle, given the proton bin used in the data analysis.

Apparatus for simultaneous ion counting and current recording in mass spectrometry

Ion counting system is coupled to the last dynode of an Allen-type electron multiplier on the mass analyzer of a double focusing mass spectrometer. This leaves the anode available for an electrometer, making possible simultaneous measurements. Coupling is achieved by a ferrite core transformer and associated circuitry.
