Optical probing of cold trapped atoms

Transitions between excited states of laser-cooled and laser-trapped rubidium and cesium atoms are probed by use of fiber and diode lasers. High-resolution Doppler-free spectra are detected by observation of the absorption and fluorescence of light from the intermediate level of two-step cascade systems. The optical double-resonance spectra show Autler-Townes splitting in the weak probe limit and more complicated spectra for a strongly coupled three-level system.

Diode laser stabilization

Center-frequency drift in diode lasers can be reduced by stabilizing the laser to an optical cavity with a low bandwidth feedback loop that acts on the injection current. Resonant optical feedback from a confocal or ring cavity can reduce high frequency noise, yielding linewidths in the 10 kHz range. With either an optical or an electronic lock to a cavity, the laser's wavelength is restricted to those regions that can be reached by temperature and current tuning of the solitary diode; this can be extended to full coverage by means of an extended cavity with a frequency-selective component, such as a diffraction grating.

Methods to recover the narrow Dicke sub-Doppler feature in evacuated wall-coated cells without restrictions on cell size

The hyperfine resonance observed in evacuated wall-coated cells with dimensions lambda/2 (lambda is the hyperfine resonance wavelength) consists of a narrow Dicke sub-Doppler linewidth feature, the spike, superimposed on a broad pedestal. The hydrogen maser provides a classic example of this lineshape. As cell size is increased, an effect unique to evacuated wall-coated cells occurs. Certain combinations of microwave field distribution and cell size result in a lineshape having a pedestal with a small spike feature or only the broad pedestal with no spike. Such conditions are not appropriate for atomic frequency standard applications. The cause of the evacuated wall-coated cell lineshape is reviewed and methods to recover the narrow spike feature without restrictions on cell size is discussed. One example is a cell with dimensions having equal volumes of exposure to opposite phases of the microwave magnetic field.

Diode laser 87Rb optical pumping in an evacuated wall-coated cell

The evacuated wall coated sealed cell coupled with diode laser optical pumping offers a number of attractive potential advantages for use in Rb or Cs atomic frequency standards. An investigation of systematic effects is required to explore possible limitations of the technique. The use of diode laser optical pumping of 87 Rb in an evacuated wall coated sealed cell is presented. Experimental results/discussion to be presented include the signal strength and line broadening of the 0 - 0 hyperfine resonance as a function of light intensity for the D1 optical transitions (F - F prime) - (2 1 prime) and (2 - 2 prime), shift of the 0 - 0 hyperfine frequency as a function of laser intensity and de-tuning from optical resonance, and diode laser frequency stabilization techniques.

Study of multiple optical transitions in 87Rb using laser diodes

Recent work with laser diodes has indicated their potential usefulness in optically pumping atomic frequency standards. Various optical pumping schemes for (87)Rb incorporating such light sources at two D1 frequencies for experimental situations of either evacuated wall-coated cells or atomic beams are considered. Numerical integration of rate equations governing the level populations with arbitrary pumping light choices of intensity, D1 hyperfine transition(s), and polarization and subsequent calculation of scattered light provide a simplified 0-0 hyperfine signal analysis. By frequency modulating one laser diode, two optical transitions were excited in an evacuated wall-coated cell and a large delta m(F) = 1 hf signal was observed.

Narrow 87Rb and 133Cs hyperfine transitions in evacuated wall-coated cells

An extension of work on wall-coated cells was made to include observation by a triple resonance technique of the 0-0 hyperfine transitions in 87Rb and 133Cs. Conventional RF excited lamps were used. Interest in such cells is for possible application in atomic clocks. The Rb cell would appear to remain especially promising in this respect.
