Structure of Low-spin States in \(^{45}\)Sc Studied via Coulomb Excitation

The electromagnetic structure of 45 Sc at low excitation energy was investigated via low-energy Coulomb excitation at the Heavy Ion Laboratory (HIL) of the University of Warsaw and at the Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) in New Delhi. A set of reduced E2, E3, and M1 matrix elements was extracted from the collected data using the GOSIA code. The reduced transition probability B(E2; 11/2 – → 7/2 – ) has been determined, allowing us to deduce the lifetime of the 11/2 – state at 1237 keV. In addition, the upper limit on the reduced transition probability B(E3; 7/2 – → 5/2 + ) has been determined for the first time. Finally, new large-scale shellmodel and beyond-mean-field calculations were performed to interpret the structure of this nucleus.

Cross-shell excited configurations in the structure of 34 Si

The cross-shell excited states of 34 Si have been investigated via β decays of the 4 − ground state and the 1 + isomeric state of 34 Al. Since the valence protons and valence neutrons occupy different major shells in the ground state as well as the intruder 1 + isomeric state of 34 Al, intruder levels of 34 Si are populated via allowed β decays. Spin assignments to such intruder levels of 34 Si were established through γ-γ angular correlation analysis for the negative-parity states. The configurations of such intruder states play crucial roles in our understanding of the N = 20 shell gap evolution. A configuration interaction model derived from the FSU Hamiltonian was utilized in order to interpret the intruder states in 34 Si. Furthermore, shell model interaction derived from a more fundamental theory with the valence space in medium similarity renormalization group method was also employed to interpret the structure of 34 Si.

First Evidence of Axial Shape Asymmetry and Configuration Coexistence in Zn 74 : Suggestion for a Northern Extension of the N = 40 Island of Inversion

The excited states of N=44 74 Zn were investigated via γ-ray spectroscopy following 74 Cu β decay. By exploiting γ-γ angular correlation analysis, the 2$_2^+$, 3$_1^+$, 0$_2^+$, and 2$_3^+$ states in 74 Zn were firmly established. The γ-ray branching and E2/M1 mixing ratios for transitions deexciting the 2$_2^+$, 3$_1^+$, and 2$_3^+$ states were measured, allowing for the extraction of relative B(E2) values. In particular, the 2$_3^+$→0$_2^+$ and 2$_3^+$→4$_1^+$ transitions were observed for the first time. Here the results show excellent agreement with new microscopic large-scale shell-model calculations, and are discussed in terms of underlying shapes, as well as the role of neutron excitations across the N=40 gap. Enhanced axial shape asymmetry (triaxiality) is suggested to characterize 74 Zn in its ground state. Furthermore, an excited K=0 band with a significantly larger softness in its shape is identified. A shore of the N=40 "island of inversion" appears to manifest above Z=26, previously thought as its northern limit in the chart of the nuclides.

Coulomb excitation of 102 Ru with 12 C and 16 O

Here, the Coulomb excitation of 102 Ru was performed with beams of 12 C and 16 O ions. The beam particles scattered at forward angles were momentum analyzed with a magnetic spectrograph. The resolution achieved enabled the populations of the $2^{+}_{1}$ state, the unresolved $2^{+}_{2}$/ $4^{+}_{1}$, and $2^{+}_{4}$/$3^{-}_{1}$, doublets of states, and the $3^{-}_{2}$ state to be determined as a function of the scattering angle. These populations are compared with gosia calculations, yielding B(E2; $2^{+}_{1}$→$0^{+}_{1}$) = 41.5 ± 2.3 W.u., B(E2; $2^{+}_{2}$→$0^{+}_{1}$) = 1.75 ± 0.11 W.u., B(E3; $3^{-}_{1}$→$0^{+}_{1}$) = 31.5 ± 3.5 W.u., and B(E3; $3^{-}_{2}$→$0^{+}_{1}$) = 6.8 ± 0.5 W.u. The B(E3; $3^{-}_{1}$→$0^{+}_{1}$) value is significantly larger than previously measured. The weakly populated $2^{+}_{3}$ state, presumed to be a member of the band built on the $0^{+}_{2}$ state, was observed clearly for a single angle only, and a fit to its population results in B(E2; $2^{+}_{3}$→$0^{+}_{1}$) = 0.053 ± 0.011 W.u. Using the known γ -ray branching ratios for the $2^{+}_{3}$ level, the B(E2; $2^{+}_{3}$→$0^{+}_{2}$) value is calculated to be 18 ± 4 W.u., substantially less than the B(E2; $2^{+}_{1}$→$0^{+}_{1}$) . This suggests that the deformation of the $0^{+}_{2}$ state is lower than that of the $0^{+}_{1}$ state. The results are compared with beyond-mean-field calculations with the Gogny-D1S interaction using the symmetry-conserving configuration-mixing method.

First direct measurement of 59 Cu(p,α) 56 Ni: A step towards constraining the Ni-Cu cycle in the cosmos

Reactions on proton-rich nuclides drive the nucleosynthesis in core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) and in x-ray bursts (XRBs). CCSNe eject the nucleosynthesis products to the interstellar medium and hence are a potential inventory of p nuclei, whereas in XRBs nucleosynthesis powers the light curves. In both astrophysical sites the Ni-Cu cycle, which features a competition between 59 Cu(p,α) 56 Ni and 59 Cu(p,γ) 60 Zn, could potentially halt the production of heavier elements. Here, we report the first direct measurement of 59 Cu(p,α) 56 Ni using a reaccelerated 59Cu beam and a cryogenic solid hydrogen target. Furthermore, our results show that the reaction proceeds predominantly to the ground state of 56 Ni, and the experimental rate has been found to be lower than Hauser-Feshbach based statistical model predictions. New results hints that the νp process could operate at higher temperatures than previously inferred and therefore remains a viable site for synthesizing the heavier elements

The GALILEO γ-ray array at the Legnaro National Laboratories

GALILEO, a new 4 pi high-resolution gamma-detection array, based on HPGe detectors, has been developed and installed at the Legnaro National Laboratories. The GALILEO array greatly benefits from a fully-digital readout chain, customized DAQ, and a variety of complementary detectors to improve the resolving power by the detection of particles, ions or high-energy gamma-ray transitions. In this paper, a full description of the array, including electronics and DAQ, is presented together with its complementary instrumentation.

Octupole correlations near Te 110

The lifetime of the 2 + and 9 – , 11 – , 13 – , 15 – states in the neutron-deficient 110 Te was measured for the first time using the recoil distance Doppler shift technique. The reported value of the reduced transition probability B(E2; $0$$^{+}_{g.s}$ → 2 + ) = 4.3(8) × 10 3 e 2 fm 4 supports the systematic for even-mass Te isotopes and was interpreted in the framework of the large-scale shell model and cranked shell model calculations. The measured reduced transition probabilities in the negative-parity yrast band revealed the upward trend towards the high spins. Furthermore, the enhanced collectivity is discussed in terms of the tilted axis cranking approach and the symmetry configuration mixing method with the Gogny D1S interaction.
