Real-time combining of residual carrier array signals using ML weight estimates

A real-time digital signal combining system for use with array feeds is proposed. The combining system attempts to compensate for signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) loss resulting from antenna deformations induced by gravitational and atmospheric effects. The combining weights are obtained directly from the observed residual carrier samples in each channel using a 'sliding-window' implementation of a maximum-likelihood (ML) parameter estimator. It is shown that with averaging times of about 0.1 s, combining loss for a seven-element array can be limited to about 0.1 dB in a realistic operational environment. This result suggests that the real-time combining system proposed here is capable of recovering virtually all of the signal power captured by the array feed, even in the presence of severe wind gusts and similar disturbances.

Digital Signal Combiner For Receiving-Antenna Feed Array

Proposed digital system combines digitized baseband samples of signals received by array of feeds in large Cassegrainian paraboloidal-dish antenna. Signals received by subantennas in focal-plane array of large dish antenna combined by system compensating in real time for distortions of wave fronts caused by mechanical distortions of antenna. Signal-combining system combines baseband output signals of receiver front ends according to complex weighting parameters estimated from signals themselves. Intended to compensate in real time for degradation of signal-to-noise ratio by vibrational, gravitational, and wind-induced deformations of antenna structure.

The capacity of the Hopfield associative memory

Techniques from coding theory are applied to study rigorously the capacity of the Hopfield associative memory. Such a memory stores n-tuple of + or - 1s. The components change depending on a hard-limited version of linear functions of all other components. With symmetric connections between components, a stable state is ultimately reached. By building up the connection matrix as a sum-of-outer products of m fundamental memories, it may be possible to recover a certain one of the m memories by using an initial n-tuple probe vector less than a Hamming distance n/2 away from the fundamental memory. If m fundamental memories are chosen at random, the maximum asymptotic value of m in order that most of the m original memories are exactly recoverable is n/(2 log n). With the added restriction that every one of the m fundamental memories be recoverable exactly, m can be no more than n/(4 log n) asymptotically as n approaches infinity. Extensions are also considered, in particular to capacity under quantization of the outer-product connection matrix. This quantized memory-capacity problem is closely related to the capacity of the quantized Gaussian channel.

Parameter estimation based on Doppler frequency shifts

An acoustic source generates an amplitude-modulated tone, with Doppler variations due to the relative motion between source and receiver. A method is presented for real-time estimation of tone rest frequency and minimal distance between source and receiver, using digital signal processing techniques. The algorithm presented here was implemented using a Texas Instruments TMS32010 processor.
