Strategies for mitigating residual magnetic field effect on pre-production PIP-II SSR2 cryomodule performance

This paper outlines the strategy aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of residual magnetic fields on the performance of pre-production SSR2 superconducting cavities within the context of the PIP-II project at Fermilab. Residual magnetic fields can significantly impact cavity performance, leading to reduced quality factor. To address this challenge, our strategy integrates various approaches including magnetic shielding, careful selection of materials, quality controls aimed at measuring magnetic permeability, magnetic hygiene to reduce residual magnetic field at the installation phase. Additionally, experimental studies are being planned to analyze the behavior of the cavities under different magnetic field conditions, and the effectiveness of advanced demagnetization procedures.

Integration of computer vision system to track the alignment SRF cavities into the test cryostat for PIP-II at Fermilab

PIP-II cryomodules use a computer vision system (H-BCAMs system) to monitor the alignment of SRF cavities and focusing lenses during assembly, testing, and operation. This contribution details the integration of the H-BCAMs into the Spoke Test Cryostat (STC) at Fermilab, which is utilized for cold testing SRF cavities prior to their integration into the string assembly. Thermal and structural finite element analyses were employed to estimate the cavities’ deformations, to be validated during cold testing in the STC using H-BCAMs. Notably, this marks the first instance of H-BCAMs integration into a cryostat and operation within a cryogenic environment.

Optimization of static heat loads of the PIP-II cryomodules based on prototype HB650 cryomodule test results

During the first cool down of the prototype HB650 cryomodule (pHB650 CM), high static heat loads have been measured compared to the estimation. Several analysis and calculations have been performed to explain this difference which led to cool down this cryomodule two additional times. Before each cool down, repairs and upgrades have been done, and instrumentations were added to identify the issues and quantify their impact on the heat loads. Based on these findings, the production cryomodule design and assembly process have been updated to align the future heat loads measurements with the estimations.

Standardization of Ancillary Installation Tooling for SRF Cavities at Fermilab

For assemblies of cavities in cleanrooms, single-use tooling systems are made for the alignment and installation of ancillary components such as couplers and bellows. To try and minimize the amount of tooling sets used, a design has been created to standardize alignment features to allow for assembly of different components with one set of tooling. A prototype set of tooling has been developed to with the required degrees of freedom for multiple assemblies while minimizing deformation during the assembly process. Prototype designs have been created for PIP-II SSR2 and 650 Cavities and for AUP Crab Cavities. Using 3D printing, this tooling can be quickly adjusted to allow for different ancillary components. The development process and status of the design will be discussed.

Final Design of the LB650 Cryomodule for the PIP-II Linear Accelerator

The Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) that will be installed at Fermilab is the first U.S. accelerator project that will have significant contributions from international partners. CEA joined the international collaboration in 2018, and its scope covers the supply of the 650 MHz low-beta cryomodule section, with the design of the cryostat (i.e the cryomodule without the cavities, the power couplers and the frequency tuning systems) and the manufacturing of its components, the assembly and tests of the pre-production cryomodule and 9 production modules. An important milestone was reached in April 2023 with the Final Design Review. This paper presents the detailed design of the 650 MHz low-beta cryomodules.

Final Design of the Production SSR1 Cryomodule for PIP-II Project at Fermilab

This contribution reports the design of the production Single Spoke Resonator Type 1 Cryomodule (SSR1 CM) for the PIP-II project at Fermilab. The innovative design is based on a structure, the strongback, which supports the coldmass from the bottom, stays at room temperature during operations, and can slide longitudinally with respect to the vacuum vessel. The Fermilab style cryomodule developed for the prototype Single Spoke Resonator Type 1 (pSSR1), the prototype High Beta 650 MHz (pHB650), and preproduction Single Spoke Resonator Type 2 (ppSSR2) cryomodules is the baseline of the present design. The focus of this contribution is on the results of calculations and finite element analyses performed to optimize the critical components of the cryomodule: vacuum vessel, strongback, thermal shield, and magnetic shield.

HB650 Cryomodule Design: From Prototype to Production

In early 2023 the assembly of the prototype HB650 cryomodule (pHB650 CM) was completed and cold tests started to evaluate its performance. The lessons learned from the design, assembly and preliminary cold tests of this cryomodule, and from the design of the SSR2 pre-production cryomodule played a fundamental role during the design optimization process of the production HB650 cryomodule (HB650 CM). Several workshops have been organized to share experiences and solve problems. This paper presents the main design changes from pHB650 to the HB650 production cryomodules and their impact on the heat loads.

Prototype HB650 Cryomodule Heat Loads Simulations

During the design stages of the PIP-II cryomodules, many analytical calculations and FEA have been performed on simpler geometry in order to estimate the heat loads and also to optimize the design. To better analyze the cryomodule cold tests, simulations have been performed with MATLAB to determine the temperature of the main components during cool down and to determine the heat loads of the cryomodule. These simulations have been applied to the High Beta 650 MHz prototype cryomodule design and compared to the cold tests performed on it.
