Ultraviolet line identifications for tau Scorpii

Identifications are presented for absorption features found in the ultraviolet spectrum of the BO V star, tau Scorpii. The spectrum, produced by the Copernicus satellite, covers the wavelengths from 949 to 1560 A. A correction to the first-order wavelength scale of the tau Scorpii atlas is derived.

The Copernicus ultraviolet spectral atlas of Gamma Pegasi

An ultraviolet spectral atlas is presented for the B2 IV star Gamma Pegasi, which has been scanned from 970 to 1501 A by the Princeton spectrometer aboard the Copernicus satellite. From 970 to 1430 A the observations have a nominal resolution of 0.05 A. At the longer wavelengths the resolution is 0.1 A. The atlas is presented in graphs. Line identifications are also listed.

Copernicus observations of Iota Herculis velocity variations

Observations of Iota Her at 109.61-109.67 nm obtained with the U1 channel of the Copernicus spectrophotometer at resolution 5 pm during 3.6 days in May, 1979, are reported. Radial-velocity variations are detected and analyzed as the sum of two sinusoids with frequencies 0.660 and 0.618 cycles/day and amplitudes 9.18 and 8.11 km/s, respectively. Weak evidence supporting the 13.9-h periodicity seen in line-profile variations by Smith (1978) is found.

The Copernicus ultraviolet spectral atlas of Beta Orionis

An ultraviolet spectral atlas is presented for the B8 Ia star Beta Orionis, which has been scanned from 999 to 1561 A by the Princeton spectrometer aboard the Copernicus satellite. From 999 to 1420 A the observations have a nominal resolution of 0.05 A. At the longer wavelengths the resolution is 0.1 A. The atlas is presented in graphs. Lines identified in the spectrum are also listed.

The Copernicus ultraviolet spectral atlas of Iota Herculis

An ultraviolet spectral atlas is presented for the B3 IV star Iota Herculis, which has been scanned from 999 to 1467 A by the Princeton spectrometer aboard the Copernicus satellite. From 999 to 1422 A the observations have a nominal resolution of 0.05 A. At the longer wavelengths the resolution is 0.1 A. The atlas is presented in graphs. Lines identified in the spectrum are also listed.

The expanding envelope of Tau Sco /B0 V/

Results are reported for an analysis of the UV spectrum of Tau Sco as observed by Copernicus. It is found that the spectrum exhibits a number of resonance lines of C III, C IV, N III, N V, O VI, Si IV, and P V, all of which have extended violet absorption wings that reach several different velocities. The UV lines of Tau Sco are compared with those of Zeta Pup, the line profiles are studied by a comparison with predicted profiles, and the optical depth of the lines is derived as a function of velocity in the envelope by means of line fitting. The velocity-height relation is examined, the mass-loss rate is derived, and the ionization equilibrium in the envelope is investigated. The data are then evaluated in light of three proposed mass-loss mechanisms. The mass-loss rate is estimated to be about 7 billionths of a solar mass per year, and the observed rapid acceleration of the stellar wind is attributed to radiation pressure in the envelope. It is shown that an imperfect-flow model for the stellar wind gives qualitative agreement with the observations.

The Copernicus ultraviolet spectral atlas Tau Scorpii

An ultraviolet spectral atlas was presented for the B0 V star, Tau Scorpii. It was scanned from 949 to 1560 A by the Princeton spectrometer aboard the Copernicus satellite. From 949 to 1420 A the observations have a nominal resolution of 0.05 A. At the longer wavelengths, the resolution was 0.1 A. The atlas was presented in both tables and graphs.

The abundance of deuterium relative to hydrogen in interstellar space

Copernicus satellite observations of the deuterium and hydrogen Lyman lines in the lines of sight to mu COl, gamma-2 Vel, alpha Cru AB, and alpha Vir AB are reported. Together with previously published data for beta Cen A, the results yield a value N(D)/N(H) of approximately 0.000018 (m.e.) or a total deuterium mass portion of approximately 0.000025. Values for all stars with their error bars are contained within a band ranging from 0.25 to 2.0 times the quoted mean ratio. These limits are probably representative of the region within 200 pc of the sun. The results for these stars are essentially independent of assumptions about the Doppler parameter describing the formation of the lines, although this value can be derived from the observations. The results are consistent with a maximum temperature of 6000 K for the lines of sight studied.
