AFRRI TRIGA Reactor Neutron and Gamma Dose Characterization Preliminary Results

Integral Experiment Request (IER) 484 is part of a series of dose characterization and nuclear accident dosimeter (NAD) exercises performed under the Department of Energy (DOE) Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP). The Armed Forces Radiobilogy Research Institute (AFRRI) 1.1 MW Training, Research, Isotopes, General Atomics (TRIGA) Mark-F reactor is the third facility to undergo a dose study to establish reference dose values. A preliminary measurement was performed earlier this year, where a variety of foils were irradiated and activation gamma rays were measured using a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. The data was taken and analyzed to calculate the neutron spectrum in the irradiation facility. This paper will present preliminary results of the neutron dose measured. The characterization of the AFRRI dose field is planned in August.

Godiva-IV Dosimetry Exercise 2022 Preliminary Results

Integral Experiment Request (IER) 538 is part of a series of dose characterization and nuclear accident dosimetry (NAD) exercises performed under the Department of Energy (DOE) Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP). This is the second NAD exercise using the Godiva-IV critical assembly and the third NAD exercise overall. The participating laboratories provided their own dosimeters that were mounted on the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) BOttle Manikin ABsorption (BOMAB) phantoms and aluminum plates. The BOMABs and plates were placed at two, three, and four meters away from the center of Godiva. Alongside the NADs, there was a LLNL Passive Neutron Spectrometer (PNS), Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) PNS, and Y-12 Sphere present to measure the neutron dose from Godiva. Two irradiations were conducted to test the NAD performance from each laboratory and assesses their performance to the DOE-STD-1098-2017 part 515 criteria. Neutron and gamma doses were measured prior to this exercise. This work presents a model for the neutron and gamma dose respectively to serve as the reference value. A code written in C/C++/ROOT was used to fit the measured neutron and gamma dose with the new models. It was assumed that the neutron and gamma doses are proportional to the change in temperature of Godiva after a burst irradiation. Uncertainties for the reference values were calculated using error propagation of the model’s parameters. Preliminary results (within twenty-four hours) and final results were compared for each laboratory. On average of all the participating laboratories, 32% of neutron doses and 78% of gamma doses were outside the DOE standards. One laboratory did not report their dose readings and were not included in this average. There is a bias for a lower neutron dose and a higher gamma dose based on the distribution of results. In comparison with the past Godiva-IV NAD exercise, there is an improvement in neutron dose readings by 20%.

Determination of energy correction coefficient for neutron albedo dosimeter. Three approaches

To accurately determine dose, albedo TLD dosimeters require application of a neutron energy correction factor (NECF). Here, in this paper, the results from three different methods were used to determine NECFs. In the first method, NECF values were calculated as a ratio of the known “conventional true” dose and the neutron dose reported by albedo dosimeter(s) irradiated on a phantom. The results from this direct method were utilized for verification of two other methods. The second method used a specially designed device called the Neutron Area Monitor (NAM) model 5. The third method of NECF determination was based on the response of a BF 3 tube under different levels of moderation. The results of this work showed that the Navy-developed Neutron Area Monitor (NAM) model 5 measures NECF values correctly when irradiated with 252 Cf (bare and D 2 O-moderated). This was an important result, because it validated the use of the NAM-5 in nuclear power and marine propulsion reactors, as their neutron energy spectrum is approximated by the field of a Cadmium-coated 30 cm diameter steel sphere of D 2 O moderated 252 Cf. In the case of a broad neutron energy spectrum the 6 Li response to the small amount of slow neutrons outweighs its response to the fast neutrons overwhelmingly responsible for the neutron dose rate. Based on the obtained results we can conclude that NAM-5 provides correct NECF determination if the fraction of slow neutrons in the neutron dose rate is more than 20%. A satisfactory correlation between the NECF determined by NAM-5 and the multi-moderated BF3 tube method was observed, but the multi-moderated BF 3 tube values were ~30% lower than those obtained by the NAM-5 at the same locations for broader neutron energy spectrum locations.
