Thermodynamic evidence for polaron stabilization inside the antiferromagnetic order of Eu5In2Sb6

Abstract Materials exhibiting electronic inhomogeneities at the nanometer scale have enormous potential for applications. Magnetic polarons are one such type of inhomogeneity which link the electronic, magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom in correlated matter and often give rise to colossal magnetoresistance. Here, we investigate single crystals of Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 by thermal expansion and magnetostriction along different crystallographic directions. These data provide compelling evidence for the formation of magnetic polarons in Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 well above the magnetic ordering temperature. More specifically, our results are consistent with anisotropic polarons with varying extent along the different crystallographic directions. A crossover revealed within the magnetically ordered phase can be associated with a surprising stabilization of ferromagnetic polarons within the global antiferromagnetic order upon decreasing temperature. These findings make Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 a rare example of such coexisting and competing magnetic orders and, importantly, shed new light on colossal magnetoresistive behavior beyond manganites.

Stabilization of U 5 f 2 configuration in UTe 2 through U 6 d dimers in the presence of Te2 chains

We investigate the topological superconductor candidate UTe 2 using high-resolution valence-band resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the U M 4 , 5 edges. We observe atomiclike low-energy excitations that support the correlated nature of this unconventional superconductor. These excitations originate from the U 5 f 2 configuration, which is unexpected since the short Te2-Te2 distances exclude Te2 being 2 − . By utilizing the photoionization cross-section dependence of the photoemission spectra in combination with band structure calculations, we infer that the stabilization of the U 5 f 2 configuration is due to the U 6 d bonding states in the U dimers acting as a charge reservoir. Our results emphasize that the description of the physical properties should commence with a 5 f 2 ansatz. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

The reverse quantum limit and its implications for unconventional quantum oscillations in YbB12

Abstract The quantum limit in a Fermi liquid, realized when a single Landau level is occupied in strong magnetic fields, gives rise to unconventional states, including the fractional quantum Hall effect and excitonic insulators. Stronger interactions in metals with nearly localized f -electron degrees of freedom increase the likelihood of these unconventional states. However, access to the quantum limit is typically impeded by the tendency of f -electrons to polarize in a strong magnetic field, consequently weakening the interactions. In this study, we propose that the quantum limit in such systems must be approached in reverse, starting from an insulating state at zero magnetic field. In this scenario, Landau levels fill in the reverse order compared to regular metals and are closely linked to a field-induced insulator-to-metal transition. We identify YbB 12 as a prime candidate for observing this effect and propose the presence of an excitonic insulator state near this transition.

Spin-texture-driven electrical transport in multi-Q antiferromagnets

Abstract Unusual magnetic textures can be stabilized in f -electron materials due to the interplay between competing magnetic interactions, complex Fermi surfaces, and crystalline anisotropy. Here we investigate CeAuSb 2 , an f -electron incommensurate antiferromagnet hosting both single- Q and double- Q spin textures as a function of magnetic fields ( H ) applied along the c axis. Experimentally, we map out the field-temperature phase diagram via electrical resistivity and thermal expansion measurements. Supported by calculations of a Kondo lattice model, we attribute the puzzling magnetoresistance enhancement in the double- Q phase to the localization of the electronic wave functions caused by the incommensurate magnetic texture.
