Probing quantum criticality in ferromagnetic CeRh 6 Ge 4

CeRh 6 Ge 4 is unusual in that its ferromagnetic transition can be suppressed continuously to zero temperature, i.e., to a ferromagnetic quantum-critical point (QCP), through the application of modest hydrostatic pressure. This discovery has raised the possibility that the ferromagnetic QCP may be of the Kondo-breakdown type characterized by a jump in Fermi volume, to which thermopower S measurements should be sensitive. Further, though S/T changes both sign and magnitude around the critical pressure P c ≈ 0.8 GPa, these changes are not abrupt but extend over a pressure interval from within the ferromagnetic state up to P c . Together with temperature and pressure variations in electrical resistivity and previously reported heat capacity, thermopower results point to the near coincidence of two sequential effects near P c , delocalization of 4f degrees of freedom through orbital-selective hybridization followed by quantum criticality of itinerant ferromagnetism.

Nodeless superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric compound ThIrSi

The superconductor ThIrSi, with Tc=6.5K, is expected to show unusual features in view of its noncentrosymmetric structure and the presence of heavy elements featuring a sizable spin-orbit coupling. Here, we report a comprehensive study of its electronic properties by means of magnetization, muon-spin rotation and relaxation (μ⁢SR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Both the superfluid density ρ sc ⁡(T) (determined via transverse-field μ⁢SR) and the spin-lattice relaxation rate T–1 1⁡(T) (determined via NMR) suggest a nodeless superconductivity. Furthermore, the absence of spontaneous magnetic fields below T c , as evinced from zero-field μ⁢SR measurements, indicates a preserved time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state of ThIrSi. Finally, temperature-dependent upper critical fields as well as field-dependent superconducting muon-spin relaxations suggest the presence of multiple superconducting gaps in ThIrSi.

Ubiquitous spin freezing in the superconducting state of UTe 2

In most superconductors electrons form Cooper pairs in a spin-singlet state mediated by either phonons or by long-range interactions such as spin fluctuations. The superconductor UTe 2 is a rare material wherein electrons are believed to form pairs in a unique spin-triplet state with potential topological properties. While spin-triplet pairing may be mediated by ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic fluctuations, experimentally, the magnetic properties of UTe 2 are unclear. By way of muon spin rotation/relaxation (μSR) measurements on independently grown UTe 2 single crystals we demonstrate the existence of magnetic clusters that gradually freeze into a disordered spin frozen state at low temperatures. Our findings suggest that inhomogeneous freezing of magnetic clusters is linked to the ubiquitous residual linear term in the temperature dependence of the specific heat (C) and the low-temperature upturn in C/T versus T. The omnipresent magnetic inhomogeneity has potential implications for experiments aimed at establishing the intrinsic low-temperature properties of UTe 2 .

Colossal piezoresistance in narrow-gap Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6

Piezoresistance, the change of the electrical resistance (R) of a material in response to an applied mechanical stress (σ), is the driving principle of electromechanical devices such as strain gauges, accelerometers, and cantilever force sensors. Enhanced piezoresistance has been traditionally observed in two classes of uncorrelated materials: nonmagnetic semiconductors and composite structures. In this study, we report the discovery of a remarkably large piezoresistance in Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 single crystals, wherein anisotropic metallic clusters naturally form within a semiconducting matrix due to electronic interactions. Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 shows a highly anisotropic piezoresistance, and uniaxial pressure along [001] of only 0.4 GPa leads to a resistivity drop of >99.95%, which results in a colossal piezoresistance factor of 5000×10 –11 Pa –1 . Our result not only reveals the role of interactions and phase separation in the realization of colossal piezoresistance, but it also highlights a route to multifunctional devices with large responses to both pressure and magnetic field.

Bulk transport paths through defects in floating zone and Al flux grown SmB 6

We investigate the roles of disorder on low-temperature transport in SmB 6 crystals grown by both the Al flux and floating zone methods. We used the inverted resistance method with Corbino geometry to investigate whether low-temperature variations in the standard resistance plateau arise from a surface or a bulk channel in floating zone samples. The results show significant sample-dependent residual bulk conduction, in contrast to smaller amounts of residual bulk conduction previously observed in Al flux grown samples with Sm vacancies. In this work, we consider hopping in an activated impurity band as a possible source for the observed bulk conduction, but it is unlikely that the large residual bulk conduction seen in floating zone samples is solely due to Sm vacancies. We therefore propose that one-dimensional defects, or dislocations, contribute as well. Using chemical etching, we find evidence for dislocations in both flux and floating zone samples, with higher dislocation density in floating zone samples than in Al flux grown samples. In addition to the possibility of transport through one-dimensional dislocations, we also discuss our results in the context of recent theoretical models of SmB 6 .

Exploring itinerant states in divalent hexaborides using rare-earth L edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We present a study of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra collected at the rare-earth L edges of divalent hexaborides YbB 6 and EuB 6 . In both systems, RIXS-active features are observed at two distinct resonances separated by ~10 eV in incident energy, with angle-dependence suggestive of distinct photon scattering processes. RIXS spectra collected at the divalent absorption peak resemble the unoccupied 5d density of states calculated using density functional theory. We discuss possible origins of this correspondence including a scenario which changes the 4f valence. In addition, anomalous resonant scattering is observed at higher incident energy, where no corresponding absorption feature is present. Our results demonstrate the potential for L-edge RIXS to assess the itinerant-state properties of -electron materials.
