Laser-energized MHD generator for hypersonic electric air-turborockets

The analysis and design of an open cycle Faraday MHD generator suitable for use in an electric air-turborocket cycle, the MHD-fanjet, is presented. The working fluid for the generators is unseeded high temperature hydrogen, generated by a standing, laser-supported combustion wave. This study also examines the performance of an advanced combined-cycle engine, powered by beamed energy, proposed for use in future SSTO aerospacecraft. This innovative engine incorporates the MHD-fanjet for the acceleration role within the hypersonic flight regime, from about Mach 11 to above Mach 25. Performance results indicate that specific impulses could fall in the range of 10,000 to 16,000 seconds. This would enable propellant mass fractions as low as 6 percent to 9 percent for such advanced shuttlecraft flying SSTO missions to low earth orbit.

Energetic closed-cycle gas core reactors for orbit raising

Closed-cycle gas core reactor power plants can be of two types. In the 'mixed flow' type, the gaseous nuclear fuel is intimately mixed with the working gas in the cavity. In the 'light bulb' type the fissioning plasma is enclosed in a transparent tube, and energy transfer to the separate working gas occurs by thermal radiation. The potentials of high temperature gas core reactors in terrestrial electric power generator applications have been considered, and a number of civilian power-beaming applications for gaseous fuel nuclear-MHD power plants in space have been suggested. Major conclusions of investigations related to the design of space power systems are discussed. Attention is given to options for conversion cycles, the power system specific mass, and research and technology issues.

MHD Generator Performance Limitations

The electrical properties of the gas are the primary limiting factor to MHD generator performance; the most relevant electrical properties are the conductivity and the Hall parameter. The maximum allowable pressure at several given levels of power extration vs. temperature is represented graphically.

Exploratory study of several advanced nuclear-MHD power plant systems.

In order for efficient multimegawatt closed cycle nuclear-MHD systems to become practical, long-life gas cooled reactors with exit temperatures of about 2500 K or higher must be developed. Four types of nuclear reactors which have the potential of achieving this goal are the NERVA-type solid core reactor, the colloid core (rotating fluidized bed) reactor, the 'light bulb' gas core reactor, and the 'coaxial flow' gas core reactor. Research programs aimed at developing these reactors have progressed rapidly in recent years so that prototype power reactors could be operating by 1980. Three types of power plant systems which use these reactors have been analyzed to determine the operating characteristics, critical parameters and performance of these power plants. Overall thermal efficiencies as high as 80% are projected, using an MHD turbine-compressor cycle with steam bottoming, and slightly lower efficiencies are projected for an MHD motor-compressor cycle.

Satellite nuclear power station: An engineering analysis

A nuclear-MHD power plant system which uses a compact non-breeder reactor to produce power in the multimegawatt range is analyzed. It is shown that, operated in synchronous orbit, the plant would transmit power safely to the ground by a microwave beam. Fuel reprocessing would take place in space, and no radioactive material would be returned to earth. Even the effect of a disastrous accident would have negligible effect on earth. A hydrogen moderated gas core reactor, or a colloid-core, or NERVA type reactor could also be used. The system is shown to approach closely the ideal of economical power without pollution.
