Incorporating historical data and past analyses for improved tensile property prediction of 9% Cr steel

Data-driven analytical clustering and visualization techniques were applied to the dataset of 9% Cr experimental alloy data generated through the eXtremeMAT project. Techniques and results were compared with the resulting clusters obtained through similar analytical techniques on previous and reduced versions of the dataset. The principal components were generated in order to reduce the dimensionality of the complex dataset and to visualize the underlying trends in the data. Partitioning around medoids was performed on the resulting principal components to determine relevant clusters. Domain knowledge labels were further applied to the principal components to compare the labels with the trends identified through the clustering methods. The resulting clusters show the addition of the new data into the dataset, and show where alignment between the domain knowledge labels and partitioning around medoids (PAM) clusters show where the labels are appropriate. The clusters can be used to compare the tensile properties of the alloys, and to reduce the variation in the dataset.

System for kick detection during a drilling operation

The disclosure provides a kick detection system for use during a drilling operation where wellbore kick warnings are provided based on indications of standoff conditions in a compensated instrument system. The system provides a warning of a potential kick condition by analyzing a current instrument compensation against a time series of past compensations, in order to monitor whether conditions within the standoff region of the wellbore are unexpectedly changing. The system comprises a source, a short-spaced detector, and a long-spaced detector, and a processor receives the short-spaced signal and the long-spaced signal, compensates the long-spaced signal, and generates standoff data reflecting the corrections applied to the long-range signal. The processor determines and maintains the standoff data as a time series and periodically compares a recent data point to a moving average in order to evaluate indications of a potential well kick.

Abstract for CRADA between VariGrid Explorations Inc. and NETL (AGMT-0863)

As the energy industry continues to invest in data, big data, and advanced analytics to improve production, reduce operation and maintenance costs, improve safety, and reduce risks, uncertainty will serve as a limiting factor in the success of these operations. Intuitive communication of uncertainty can provide more transparency in the decision-making process; offering the ability to more accurately evaluate the risk and impact of decisions, identify data and knowledge gaps, and evaluate trade-offs. The issue of uncertainty will thus play a large role in the success of investments that rely on big data and data analytics. However, no robust method for representation of uncertainty in spatial data visuals currently exists. As such, uncertainty is, at best, communicated using multiple independent visuals and aggregated in final displays, or frequently omitted altogether. Failure to accurately and effectively quantify and communicate uncertainty poses a barrier, limiting critical information that would better allow businesses to make more accurate and intelligent decisions.

Abstract - Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between Environmental Defense Fund and National Energy Technology Laboratory

Here, we summarize an effort to develop a global oil and gas infrastructure (GOGI) taxonomy and geodatabase, using a combination of big data computing, custom search and data integration algorithms, and expert driven spatio-temporal analytics to identify, access, and evaluate open oil and gas data resources and uncertainty trends worldwide. This approach leveraged custom National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) tools and capabilities in collaboration with Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and Carbon Limits subject matter expertise, to identify over 380 datasets and integrate more than 4.8 million features into the GOGI database. In addition to acquisition of open oil and gas infrastructure data, information was collected and analyzed to assess the spatial, temporal, and source quality of these resources, and estimate their completeness relative to the top 40 hydrocarbon producing and consuming countries.
