On a Unified Core Characterization Methodology to Support the Systematic Assessment of Rare Earth Elements and Critical Minerals Bearing Unconventional Carbon Ores and Sedimentary Strata

A significant gap exists in our understanding and ability to predict the spatial occurrence and extent of rare earth elements (REE) and certain critical minerals (CM) in sedimentary strata. This is largely due to a lack of existing, systematic, and well-distributed REE and CM samples and analyses in United States sedimentary basins. In addition, the type of sampling and characterization performed to date has generally lacked the resolution and approach required to constrain geologic and geographic heterogeneities typical of subsurface, mineral resources. Here, we describe a robust and systematic method for collecting core scale characterization data that can be applied to studies on the contextual and spatial attributes, the geologic history, and lithostratigraphy of sedimentary basins. The methods were developed using drilled cores from coal bearing sedimentary strata in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming (PRB). The goal of this effort is to create a unified core characterization methodology to guide systematic collection of key data to achieve a foundation of spatially and geologically constrained REEs and CMs. This guidance covers a range of measurement types and methods that are each useful either individually or in combination to support characterization and delineation of REE and CM occurrences. The methods herein, whether used in part or in full, establish a framework to guide consistent acquisition of geological, geochemical, and geospatial datasets that are key to assessing and validating REE and CM occurrences from geologic sources to support future exploration, assessment, and techno-economic related models and analyses.

Data-driven offshore CO 2 saline storage assessment methodology

The world produces approximately 50 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases annually. This is measured in CO 2 -equivalents, and geologic CO 2 storage has the potential to advance decarbonization and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. New technologies to assess offshore carbon storage are needed to address resource, regulatory, and commercial needs. Although most efforts to assess storage resources focus on onshore criteria, offshore reservoirs offer significant storage potential and distinct development challenges. Potential advantages of offshore carbon storage include being further from human population centers and less potential to interact with groundwater. The U.S. Department of Energy's method for evaluating storage capacity in non-oil-bearing saline reservoirs has been enhanced to support assessments for offshore environments in the Offshore CO 2 Saline Storage methodology (OCSS). This methodology applies data-driven capabilities to estimate saline storage capacity while accounting for features specific to offshore reservoirs. Features include changes in CO 2 density and sedimentary differences that impact estimates of permanence and capacity. The Offshore CO 2 Saline Storage Calculator mechanizes OCSS to estimate storage capacity. This paper presents the methodology and estimates for 18 geologic domains in the Gulf of Mexico. Potential storage distributions, sensitivity analyses, and the incorporation of spatial data and tools to support safe site selection are also discussed.

Assessment of Outliers in Alloy Datasets Using Unsupervised Techniques

We report advancements in data analytics techniques have enabled complex, disparate datasets to be leveraged for alloy design. Identifying outliers in a dataset can reduce noise, identify erroneous and/or anomalous records, prevent overfitting, and improve model assessment and optimization. In this work, two alloy datasets (9-12% Cr ferritic martensitic steels, and austenitic stainless steels) have been assessed for outliers using unsupervised techniques and supplemented with domain knowledge. Principal component analysis and k-means clustering were applied to the data, and points were assessed as outliers based on their distance away from other points in the cluster and from other points in the dataset. The outlier characteristics were investigated to determine both cluster-specific and overall trends in the properties of the outlier points. The approach demonstrated here is extensible to other alloy datasets for outlier identification and evaluation to improve the reliability of machine learning and modeling predictions for advanced alloy design.

Lithologies and Depositional Environments for the NATCARB Saline Reservoirs

This dataset summarize the results of a literature review performed to define the primary lithologies and depositional environments for the target reservoir units defined by the National Carbon Sequestration Database (NATCARB) Saline reservoir 10km Grid data layer, accessible at https://edx.netl.doe.gov/dataset/natcarb. The potential saline storage reservoirs, defined in the Saline 10km Grid layer and in this sheet as "RESOURCE_NAME", were summarized and a literature review was completed to define the primary lithology and depositional environment, and sometimes a secondary lithology and depositional environment for each rock unit. If no verifiable resources were found during the literature review, the primary and secondary lithology and depositional environments were left blank. This file is organized by sheets for each of the 7 Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships (RCSP): Big Sky Carbon Sequestration Partnership (BSCSP), the Midwest Geological Sequestration Consortium (MGSC), the Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (MRCSP), the Plains CO₂ Reduction Partnership (PCOR), the Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (SECARB), the Southwest Regional Partnership on Carbon Storage (SWP), and the West Coast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (WESTCARB). The partnerships last updated the NATCARB database in 2015.
