Hydrodynamical simulations of star-gas interactions in the interstellar medium with an external gravitational potential

We have calculated 2D models for the global structure of the interstellar medium in a disk galaxy where stars and gas are coupled through star formation, mass loss, stellar heating of the gas, and optically thin radiative cooling. In one set of models, the two dimensions are in the plane of a disk, and for one case, the total size of the region is 1 kpc square. Using a more accurate numerical approach, we confirm the results of Chiang and Bregman (1988) that H I forms into filaments or sheets separated by hotter, more diffuse gas. Although the filaments often have denser subregions, individual clouds of neutral gas are rare. We calculated the vertical distribution of the gas in another set of models where one dimension was in the plane and the other was perpendicular to it. A filament and hot gas network still occurs, although dense neutral complexes are more common and occur near the midplane. The hot gas often cools as it rises, leading to the highest velocity material having both positive and negative velocities. We find other features that are qualitatively similar to observations; for instance, H I 'worms' are produced.

Statistical analysis of power-size-redshift distributions of extragalactic jets

This paper investigates whether a hot, sparse, yet cosmologically significant intergalactic medium is consistent with data collected from extragalactic radio sources. This is done by use of Monte Carlo simulations which employ previously run pseudohydrodynamical simulations to cover an observational parameter space. These observational parameters include the scale height, central density, and temperature of a (isothermal) galactic halo, and the power of the central engine which drives the jet. The Monte Carlo simulations generate distribution of sizes in bins of (received) power and redshift, which have been compared with observational data using Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests. Results of this analysis are consistent with the existence of an IGM with temperature and density mentioned above. In addition, this analysis suggests that the active lifetime of powerful extragalactic radio sources decreases with increasing power.

Expanding hydrodynamical jets crossing a galactic halo/intergalactic medium interface

Parameters within ranges that are plausible for radio sources are presently used to perform two-dimensional hydrodynamical calculations of axisymmetric, initially conical, jets whose initial propagation is through isothermal galactic halos with power-law density distributions; these emerge across a pressure-matched interface into a hotter, but less dense medium whose parameters are typical of an intracluster or intergalactic gas. Upon crossing this interface, the jets accelerate and focused toward cylindrical shapes having long, narrow cocoons.
