An optimal estimation inversion scheme is utilized with atmospheric data and emission estimates to determined the globally averaged CH3CCl3 tropospheric lifetime and OH concentration. The data are taken from atmospheric measurements from surface stations of 1,1,1-trichloroethane and show an annual increase of 4.4 +/- 0.2 percent. Industrial emission estimates and a small oceanic loss rate are included, and the OH concentration for the same period (1978-1990) are incorporated at 1.0 +/- 0.8 percent/yr. The positive OH trend is consistent with theories regarding OH and ozone trends with respect to land use and global warming. Attention is given to the effects of the ENSO on the CH3CCl3 data and the assumption of continuing current industrial anthropogenic emissions. A novel tropical atmospheric tracer-transport mechanism is noted with respect to the CH3CCl3 data.
The paper discusses the application of computational fluid dynamics as a design tool for the Hot Gas Manifold of the Space Shuttle Main Engine. An improved Hot Gas Manifold configuration was arrived at computationally. This configuration was then built and air flow tested. Testing verified this configuration to be a substantial improvement over existing flight designs.
An implicit finite difference code cast in general curvilinear coordinates is further developed for three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flows. The code is based on the method of pseudocompressibility and utilizes the Beam and Warming implicit approximate factorization algorithm to achieve computational efficiency. A multiple-zone method is further extended to include composite-grids to overcome the excessive computer memory required for solving turbulent flows in complex three-dimensional geometries. A simple turbulence model is proposed for internal flows. The code is being used for the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) internal flow analyses.
A new manner of representing a class of abstract cell models previously developed by the author is presented. Some of the properties of this dynamical representation are explored, and their consequences discussed.
It is shown that, under rather general conditions, it is possible to formally decompose the dynamics of an n-dimensional dynamical system into a number of non-interacting subsystems. It is shown that these decompositions are in general not simply related to the kinds of observational procedures in terms of which the original state variables of the system are defined. Some consequences of this construction for reductionism in biology are discussed.
The three-dimensional steady radial expansion of a viscous, heat-conducting, compressible fluid from a spherical sonic source into a vacuum is analyzed using the Navier-Stokes equations as a basis. It is assumed that the model fluid is a perfect gas having constant specific heats, a constant Prandtl number of order unity, and viscosity coefficients varying as a power of the absolute temperature. Limiting forms for the flow variable solutions are studied for the Reynolds number based on the sonic source conditions, going to infinity and the Newtonian parameter both fixed and going to zero. For the case of the viscosity-temperature exponent between .5 and 1, it is shown that the velocity as well as the pressure approach zero as the radial distance goes to infinity. The formulations of the distinct regions that span the domain extending from the sonic source to the vacuum are presented.
