Safety Review Board review of explosive pressing initiation event

On June 30, 2020, a 0.87 gram PETN charge being pressed in the Rapid Prototyping Facility (RPF), unexpectedly initiated, resulting in destruction of the pressing fixture but no injuries or facility damage. In response, the Safety Review Board (SRB) met on Aug. 13, 2020 and Oct. 1, 2020 to review information collected following the incident, consider likely direct causes, and form recommendations.

Method for the preparation of uniform triaminotrinitrobenzene microparticles

A new, rapid and inexpensive synthesis method for monodispersed triaminotrinitrobenzene (TATB) microparticles based on micelle-confined precipitation that enables control of microscopic morphology. The morphology of the TATB microparticles can be tuned between quasi-spherical and faceted by controlling the speed of recrystallization. The method enables improved performance and production consistency of TATB explosives for military grade explosives and propellants

Synthesis of energetic material particles with controlled morphology

A surfactant-assisted self-assembly method can be used to crystallize energetic materials with controlled morphology. Microparticles of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) formed by this method may have enhanced functional reproducibility due to their monodisperse nature, and decreased shock sensitivity due to their sub-2 μm particle size.

100-lbf LO2/CH4 RCS Thruster Testing and Validation

100 pound thrust liquid Oxygen-Methane thruster sized for RCS (Reaction Control System) applications. Innovative Design Characteristics include: a) Simple compact design with minimal part count; b) Gaseous or Liquid propellant operation; c) Affordable and Reusable; d) Greater flexibility than existing systems; e) Part of NASA'S study of "Green Propellants." Hot-fire testing validated performance and functionality of thruster. Thruster's dependence on mixture ratio has been evaluated. Data has been used to calculate performance parameters such as thrust and Isp. Data has been compared with previous test results to verify reliability and repeatability. Thruster was found to have an Isp of 131 s and 82 lbf thrust at a mixture ratio of 1.62.
