Multigrid, Fractional-Step Computation Of Flow

Speed of computer code solving three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations of flow of incompressible fluid by fractional-step method increased significantly by use of multigrid procedures. In method, equations solved on general nonorthogonal curvilinear coordinate grid, using volume fluxes. At each time step, computations performed in two fractional steps. In first step, equations of conservation of momentum solved by use of gradient of pressure from previous time step via explicit approximate-factorization method, yielding approximate flow field that does not satisfy equation of conservation of mass. In second step, discrete Poisson-like equation with Neumann-type boundary conditions, formed by combining equations of conservation of momentum and mass, solved iteratively.

A Fractional-Step Method Of Computing Incompressible Flow

Method of computing time-dependent flow of incompressible, viscous fluid involves numerical solution of Navier-Stokes equations on two- or three-dimensional computational grid based on generalized curvilinear coordinates. Equations of method derived in primitive-variable formulation. Dependent variables are pressure at center of each cell of computational grid and volume fluxes across faces of each cell. Volume fluxes replace Cartesian components of velocity; these fluxes correspond to contravariant components of velocity multiplied by volume of computational cell, in staggered grid. Choice of dependent variables enables simple extension of previously developed staggered-grid approach to generalized curvilinear coordinates and facilitates enforcement of conservation of mass.

Development of a fractional-step method for the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized coordinate systems

A fractional step method is developed for solving the time-dependent three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized coordinate systems. The primitive variable formulation uses the pressure, defined at the center of the computational cell, and the volume fluxes across the faces of the cells as the dependent variables, instead of the Cartesian components of the velocity. This choice is equivalent to using the contravariant velocity components in a staggered grid multiplied by the volume of the computational cell. The governing equations are discretized by finite volumes using a staggered mesh system. The solution of the continuity equation is decoupled from the momentum equations by a fractional step method which enforces mass conservation by solving a Poisson equation. This procedure, combined with the consistent approximations of the geometric quantities, is done to satisfy the discretized mass conservation equation to machine accuracy, as well as to gain the favorable convergence properties of the Poisson solver. The momentum equations are solved by an approximate factorization method, and a novel ZEBRA scheme with four-color ordering is devised for the efficient solution of the Poisson equation. Several two- and three-dimensional laminar test cases are computed and compared with other numerical and experimental results to validate the solution method. Good agreement is obtained in all cases.

Multigrid acceleration of a fractional-step solver in generalized curvilinear coordinate systems

The efficiency of the INS3D-fractional step (FS) code has been significantly enhanced by accelerating the Poisson solver with a multigrid (MG) method. This is apparently the first implementation of the MG method for solving the 3D discrete Poisson-like equation obtained in the derivation of FS solution methods for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized nonorthogonal coordinate systems using a staggered arrangement of the variables. The MG solver is insensitive to the geometry, even in cases of highly nonorthogonal clustered meshes, as well as to the free parameters of MG methods.

Time-dependent solutions of viscous incompressible flows in moving co-ordinates

A time-accurate solution method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized moving coordinates is presented. A finite-volume discretization method that satisfies the geometric conservation laws for time-varying computational cells is used. The discrete equations are solved by a fractional-step solution procedure. The solution is second-order-accurate in space and first-order-accurate in time. The pressure and the volume fluxes are chosen as the unknowns to facilitate the formulation of a consistent Poisson equation and thus to obtain a robust Poisson solver with favorable convergence properties. The method is validated by comparing the solutions with other numerical and experimental results. Good agreement is obtained in all cases.

A fractional step solution method for the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized coordinate systems

The time-dependent, three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are presently solved in generalized coordinate systems by means of a fractional-step method whose primitive variable formulation uses as dependent variables, in place of the Cartesian components of the velocity: (1) pressure (defined at the center of the computational cell), and (2) volume fluxes across the faces of the cells. The momentum equations are solved by means of an approximate factorization method. A novel 'ZEBRA' scheme incorporating four-color ordering efficiently solves the Poisson equation. Illustrative two- and three-dimensional laminar flow test cases are computed and evaluated relative to extant numerical and experimental results, and good agreement is obtained.

Development of a time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes solver based on a fractional-step method

The development, validation and application of a fractional step solution method of the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized coordinate systems are discussed. A solution method that combines a finite-volume discretization with a novel choice of the dependent variables and a fractional step splitting to obtain accurate solutions in arbitrary geometries was previously developed for fixed-grids. In the present research effort, this solution method is extended to include more general situations, including cases with moving grids. The numerical techniques are enhanced to gain efficiency and generality.

Simulation Of Unsteady, Viscous, Incompressible Flow

Method for numerical solution of Navier-Stokes equations of viscous, incompressible flow developed based on use of fractional-step procedure. Accurate to second order in both space and time. Attempt made to minimize Poisson-equation difficulties by choosing pressures at centers and volume fluxes across faces of computational cells as dependent variables instead of familiar Cartesian components of velocity. Choice ensures satisfaction of discrete equation of conservation of mass to within round-off errors in any coordinate system and has favorable effects on convergence properties.

Computations of three-dimensional steady and unsteady viscous incompressible flows

The INS3D family of computational fluid dynamics computer codes is presented. These codes are used to as tools in developing and assessing algorithms for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for steady-state and unsteady flow problems. This work involves applying the codes to real-world problems involving complex three-dimensional geometries. The algorithms utilized include the method of pseudocompressibility including both central and upwind differencing, several types of artificial dissipation schemes, approximate factorization, and an implicit line-relaxation scheme. These codes have been validated using a wide range of problems including flow over a backward-facing step, driven cavity flow, flow through various types of ducts, and steady and unsteady flow over a circular cylinder. Many diverse flow applications have been solved using these codes including parts of the Space Shuttle Main Engine, problems in naval hydrodynamics, low-speed aerodynamics, and biomedical fluid flows. The presentation details several of these, including the flow through a Space Shuttle Main Engine inducer, vortex shedding behind a circular cylinder, and flow through an artificial heart.

Numerical solution of unsteady incompressible viscous flows in generalized moving coordinate systems

A solution method of the time-accurate, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized curvilinear moving coordinate systems is presented in this paper. Accuracy is achieved by a conservative finite-volume discretization which satisfies the geometric conservation laws in generalized moving coordinate systems. The solution method is second-order accurate in space and first-order accurate in time. A fractional step solution method is used to efficiently solve the discrete equations. The unknowns, namely the pressure and the volume-fluxes, are chosen to facilitate the formulation of a consistent Poisson equation and to obtain a robust Poisson solver with favorable convergence properties. The method is validated by comparisons to other numerical and experimental solutions. The comparisons show good agreement.

Numerical simulation of unsteady incompressible viscous flows in generalized coordinate systems

Several numerical solutions of the three dimensional unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized coordinate systems are presented. The governing equations are discretized by finite volumes with special care to the accurate approximation of the geometric quantities. The unknowns are the pressure and the volume fluxes over the computational cell faces. This formulation results in a robust fractional step solution method for solving discrete equations. Although this method is formulated for the three dimensional case, only two dimensional unsteady results are given. Results are presented for a lid driven two dimensional cavity flow at Reynolds number of 10,000, and for the flow over a circular cylinder with vortex shedding for several Reynolds numbers in the range 100 less than Re less than 1000.

A solution method for the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized coordinate systems

A solution method based on a fractional step approach is developed for obtaining time-dependent solutions of the three-dimensional, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized coordinate systems. The governing equations are discretized conservatively by finite volumes using a staggered mesh system. The primitive variable formulation uses the volume fluxes across the faces of each computational cell as dependent variables. This procedure, combined with accurate and consistent approximations of geometric parameters, is done to satisfy the discretized mass conservation equation to machine accuracy as well as to gain favorable convergence properties of the Poisson solver. The discretized equations are second-order-accurate in time and space and no smoothing terms are added. An approximate-factorization scheme is implemented in solving the momentum equations. A novel ZEBRA scheme with four-color ordering is devised for the efficient solution of the Poisson equation. Several two and three-dimensional solutions are compared with other numerical and experimental results to validate the present method.

A numerical method for the solution of three dimensional, incompressible, viscous flows over slender bodies

A marching iterative method for the solution of the three dimensional, incompressibhle, steady and parabolized Navier-Stokes equations is described. The equations are written in primitive variables and discretized in general axisymmetric orthogonal coordinate systems. The coupled set of finite-difference equations are solved without any splitting or factorization errors. Moreover, the continuity equation and the two crossflow momentum equations are exactly satisfied at every step of the iterative process. The solution scheme is equivalent to the solution of one Poisson equation by the Successive Plane Over Relaxation method and has good convergence properties. Other existing solution methods resemble a Jacobi-type iterative scheme and therefore are less efficient. Numerical experiments include the laminar, incompressible flow over prolate spheroids at incidence.
