Low Energy Excess and New Physics Searches with MicroBooNE

The MicroBooNE detector is a liquid argon TPC located in the Booster Neutrino Beamline at Fermilab. Leveraging the unique capabilities of the LArTPC technology to distinguish photons from electron showers, one of MicroBooNE's primary goals is to investigate MiniBooNE low energy excess (LEE), an anomalously large observed rate of events containing a single electromagnetic shower. This electromagnetic shower could be caused by electrons, photons, or electron-positron (e+e-) pairs, which would all look very similar in the MiniBooNE Cherenkov detector, but could have distinct signatures in the MicroBooNE LArTPC. In this poster, we present an updated and new search for these signals, including searches for electron neutrino, single-photons, and e+e- pairs.

Measurement of the π - -Ar total hadronic cross section at the LArIAT experiment

We present the first measurement of the negative pion total hadronic cross section on argon in a restricted phase space, which we performed at the Liquid Argon In A Testbeam (LArIAT) experiment. All hadronic reaction channels, as well as hadronic elastic interactions with scattering angle greater than 5° are included. The pions have kinetic energies in the range 100–700 MeV and are produced by a beam of charged particles impinging on a solid target at the Fermilab test beam facility. LArIAT employs a 0.24 ton active mass liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) to measure the pion hadronic interactions. For this measurement, LArIAT has developed the “thin slice method,” a new technique to measure cross sections with LArTPCs. While moderately higher, our measurement of the π - -Ar total hadronic cross section is generally in agreement with the geant4 prediction.

Grid-based minimization at scale: Feldman-Cousins corrections for light sterile neutrino search

High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments generally employ sophisticated statistical methods to present results in searches of new physics. In the problem of searching for sterile neutrinos, likelihood ratio tests are applied to short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments to construct confidence intervals for the parameters of interest. The test statistics of the form Δχ2 is often used to form the confidence intervals, however, this approach can lead to statistical inaccuracies due to the small signal rate in the region-of-interest. In this paper, we present a computational model for the computationally expensive Feldman-Cousins corrections to construct a statistically accurate confidence interval for neutrino oscillation analysis. The program performs a grid-based minimization over oscillation parameters and is written in C++. Our algorithms make use of vectorization through Eigen3, yielding a single-core speed-up of 350 compared to the original implementation, and achieve MPI data parallelism by employing DIY. We demonstrate the strong scaling of the application at High-Performance Computing (HPC) sites. We utilize HDF5 along with HighFive to write the results of the calculation to file.

The Liquid Argon In A Testbeam (LArIAT) Experiment

The LArIAT liquid argon time projection chamber, placed in a tertiary beam of charged particles at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility, has collected large samples of pions, muons, electrons, protons, and kaons in the momentum range 0∼30–0140 MeV/c. This paper describes the main aspects of the detector and beamline, and also reports on calibrations performed for the detector and beamline components.

Grid-based minimization at scale: Feldman-Cousins corrections for SBN

We present a computational model for the construction of Feldman-Cousins (FC) corrections frequently used in High Energy Physics (HEP) analysis. The program contains a grid-based minimization and is written in C++. Our algorithms exploit vectorization through Eigen3, yielding a single-core speed-up of 350 compared to the original implementation, and achieve MPI data parallelism by using DIY. We demonstrate the application to scale very well at High Performance Computing (HPC) sites. We use HDF5 in conjunction with HighFive to write results of the calculation to file.
