Comprehensive Synthesis and Structural Trends in Tetramethyl Diglycolamide (TMDGA) Nitrate Complexes with Lanthanides and Americium

Complexes of N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl diglycolamide (TMDGA), a hydrophilic diglycolamide (DGA) proposed as an aqueous phase holdback reagent, have been crystallized for the majority of the lanthanide series (excluding promethium), yttrium, and americium to deepen our structural understanding of trivalent metal ion (M 3+ ) DGA coordination compounds in the presence of nitrate counter-anions. The presented collection of 16 complexes with accompanying single-crystal structures, taking formulas [M(TMDGA) 3 ][M(NO 3 ) 6 ] (M = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Am), [M(TMDGA) 3 ][M(NO 3 ) 5 (H 2 O)] 1–x [M(NO 3 ) 4 (H 2 O) 2 ] x (NO 3 ) 1+x (M = Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb), [M(TMDGA) 3 ] 2 [M(NO 3 ) 4 (H 2 O) 2 ] 0.75 [M(NO 3 ) 5 (H 2 O)] 1.25 (NO 3 ) 2.75 ·H 2 O (M = Lu), and [M(TMDGA) 3 ][M(NO 3 ) 5 (H 2 O)](NO 3 )·CH 3 OH (M = Y) were all synthesized via solvent diffusion of reaction mixtures containing the metal nitrate M(NO 3 ) 3 ·nH 2 O and TMDGA. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of these new structures show that each TMDGA complex comprises of three TMDGA ligands coordinating the metal ion via carbonyl and etheric oxygen atoms forming [M(TMDGA) 3 ] 3+ cations. Spectroscopy measurements under high pressure displayed notable differences in the f → f transition shifting between that of Nd(III) and Am(III). Shifting of transitions by 2.0 nm were observed in Nd up to 8.50 ± 0.09 GPa, while Am saw shifting between 11.0 to 13.5 nm at pressures up to 20.06 ± 1.90 GPa. The local geometry in these complexes is a distorted spherical capped square antiprism (CSAPR-9) except for of the yttrium complex, which exhibits a distorted spherical tricapped trigonal prismatic (TCTPR-9) geometry. Further, the anions that form concomitantly with the TMDGA complexes are composed of hexanitrato species for the early lanthanide ions (lanthanum to samarium); whereas the remaining smaller lanthanides did not possess sufficiently large ionic radii to coordinate six bidentate nitrate anions, instead, one or two nitrate anions are situated in the outer sphere. The systematic progression of changes in the anionic environments of these complexes outlines the changing coordination habits afforded by the lanthanide contraction.

Chemical Kinetics for the Oxidation of Californium(III) Ions with Select Radiation-Induced Inorganic Radicals (Cl 2 •– and SO 4 •– )

Despite the availability of transuranic elements increasing in recent years, our understanding of their most basic and inherent radiation chemistry is limited and yet essential for accurate interpretation of their physical and chemical properties. Here, in this work, we explore the transient interactions between trivalent californium ions (Cf 3+ ) and select inorganic radicals arising from the radiolytic decomposition of common anions and functional group constituents, specifically the dichlorine (Cl 2 •- ) and sulfate (SO 4 •- ) radical anions. Chemical kinetics, as measured by integrated electron pulse radiolysis and transient absorption spectroscopy techniques, are presented for the reactions of these two oxidizing radicals with Cf 3+ ions. The derived and ionic strength corrected second-order rate coefficients (k) for these radiation-induced processes are k(Cf 3+ + Cl 2 •- ) = (8.28 ± 0.61) × 10 5 M -1 s -1 and k(Cf 3+ + SO 4 •- ) = (9.50 ± 0.43) × 10 8 M -1 s -1 under ambient temperature conditions (22 ± 1 °C).

Impact of lanthanide ion complexation and temperature on the chemical reactivity of N , N , N ', N '-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA) with the dodecane radical cation

The impact of trivalent lanthanide ion complexation and temperature on the chemical reactivity of N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA) with the n-dodecane radical cation (RH˙+) has been measured by electron pulse radiolysis and evaluated by quantum mechanical calculations. Additionally, Arrhenius parameters were determined for the reaction of the non-complexed TODGA ligand with the RH˙ + from 10–40 °C, giving the activation energy (E a = 17.43 ± 1.64 kJ mol –1 ) and pre-exponential factor (A = (2.36 ± 0.05) × 10 13 M –1 s –1 ). The complexation of Nd(III), Gd(III), and Yb(III) ions by TODGA yielded [LnIII(TODGA)3(NO3)3] complexes that exhibited significantly increased reactivity (up to 9.3× faster) with the RH˙ + , relative to the non-complexed ligand: k([Ln III (TODGA) 3 (NO 3 ) 3 ] + RH˙ + ) = (8.99 ± 0.93) × 10 10 , (2.88 ± 0.40) × 10 10 , and (1.53 ± 0.34) × 10 10 M –1 s –1 , for Nd(III), Gd(III), and Yb(III) ions, respectively. The rate coefficient enhancement measured for these complexes exhibited a dependence on atomic number, decreasing as the lanthanide series was traversed. Preliminary reaction free energy calculations—based on a model [Ln III (TOGDA)] 3+ complex system—indicate that both electron/hole and proton transfer reactions are energetically unfavorable for complexed TODGA. Furthermore, complementary average local ionization energy calculations showed that the most reactive region of model N,N,N',N'-tetraethyl diglycolamide (TEDGA) complexes, [Ln III (TEGDA) 3 (NO 3 ) 3 ], toward electrophilic attack is for the coordinated nitrate (NO 3 – ) counter anions. Furthermore, it is possible that radical reactions with the complexed NO 3 – counter anions dominate the differences in rates seen for the [Ln III (TODGA) 3 (NO 3 ) 3 ] complexes, and are likely responsible for the reported radioprotection in the presence of TODGA complexes.

Isolation of a californium(II) crown–ether complex

The actinides, from californium to nobelium (Z = 98–102), are known to have an accessible +2 oxidation state. Understanding the origin of this chemical behaviour requires characterizing Cf II materials, but investigations are hampered by the fact that they have remained dificult to isolate. This partly arises from the intrinsic challenges of manipulating this unstable element, as well as a lack of suitable reductants that do not reduce Cf III to Cf°. Here we show that a Cf II crown–ether complex, Cf(18-crown-6)I 2 , can be prepared using an Al/Hg amalgam as a reductant. Spectroscopic evidence shows that Cf III can be quantitatively reduced to Cf II , and rapid radiolytic re-oxidation in solution yields co-crystallized mixtures of Cf II and Cf III complexes without the Al/Hg amalgam. Furthermore, quantum-chemical calculations show that the Cf– ligand interactions are highly ionic and that 5f/6d mixing is absent, resulting in weak 5f→5f transitions and an absorption spectrum dominated by 5f→6d transitions.

Two Neptunium(III) Mellitate Coordination Polymers: Completing the Series Np–Cf of Trans-Uranic An(III) Mellitates

For this work, two neptunium(III) mellitates, 237 Np 2 (mell)(H 2 O) 9 ·1.5H 2 O (Np-1α) and 237 Np 2 (mell)(H 2 O) 8 ·2H 2 O (Np-1β), have been synthesized from 237 NpCl 4 (dme) 2 by reduction with KC 8 and subsequent reaction with an aqueous solution of mellitic acid (H 6 mell). Characterization by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy confirms that the neptunium is in its +3 oxidation state and both polymorphs are isostructural to the previously reported plutonium mellitates. Of the two morphologies, Np-1α is indefinitely stable in air, while Np-1β slowly oxidizes over several months. This is due to the change in the energy of the metal-ligand charge-transfer absorption exhibited by these compounds attributed to differing numbers of carboxylate bonds to Np(III), where in Np-1β the energy is low enough to result in spontaneous oxidation.

Synthesis, characterization, and high-pressure studies of a 3D berkelium( III ) carboxylate framework material

Here, a berkelium(III) mellitate, Bk 2 [C 6 (CO 2 ) 6 ](H 2 O) 8 ·2H 2 O, was synthesized and rapidly crystallized by reacting mellitic acid, C 6 (CO 2 H) 6 , and BkBr 3 ·nH 2 O in an aqueous medium. Single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the compound crystallizes as a three-dimensional framework isostructural with Pu(III), Am(III), and Cm(III) mellitates. UV-vis-NIR spectroscopic studies as a function of pressure were performed using a diamond anvil cell and show that the 5f → 5f transitions of Bk 3+ display enhanced hypsochromic shifting when compared to other An(III) mellitates.
