Heatshield for Extreme Entry Environment Technology (HEEET) Thermal Protection System (TPS)

Starting in 2013 and completing in 2019, the Heatshield for Extreme Entry Environment Technology (HEEET) project has been working to mature a 3-D Woven Thermal Protection System (TPS) to Technical Readiness Level (TRL) 6 to support future NASA missions to destinations with extreme entry environments such as Venus, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and high-speed sample return missions to Earth. A key aspect of the project has been the building and testing of a 1-meter base diameter Engineering Test Unit (ETU) representative of what could be used for a Saturn probe. This paper provides a high-level overview of the HEEET project including manufacturing and testing of the ETU for structural model verification, establish system capability and verify manufacturing workmanship.

Optical Method for Detecting Displacements and Strains at Ultra-High Temperatures During Thermo-Mechanical Testing

An ultra-high temperature optical method incorporates speckle optics for sensing displacement and strain measurements well above conventional measurement techniques. High temperature pattern materials are used which can endure experimental high temperature environments while simultaneously having a minimum optical aberration. A purge medium is used to reduce or eliminate optical distortions and to reduce, and/or eliminate oxidation of the target specimen.

Fiber Optic Rosette Strain Gauge Development and Application on a Large-Scale Composite Structure

A detailed description of the construction, application, and measurement of 196 FO rosette strain gauges that measured multi-axis strain across the outside upper surface of the forward bulkhead component of a multibay composite fuselage test article is presented. A background of the FO strain gauge and the FO measurement system as utilized in this application is given and results for the higher load cases of the testing sequence are shown.
