Observation of Energy Fluctuation

The fluctuation of energy is discussed in all thermodynamics textbooks because of the crucial role it plays in bringing to light the statistical uncertainties of all thermodynamic quantities.

Modem design for a MOBILESAT terminal

The implementation is described of a programmable digital signal processor based system, designed for use as a test bed in the development of a digital modem, codec, and channel simulator. Code was written to configure the system as a 5600 bps or 6600 bps QPSK modem. The test bed is currently being used in an experiment to evaluate the performance of digital speech over shadowed channels in the Australian mobile satellite (MOBILESAT) project.

Cloud containment by a flux of particles

It is generally believed that relatively dense gas clouds must be present in the broad-line-emitting regions of Seyfert galaxies and quasars. A possible mechanism for the containment of these dense clouds is investigated in which momentum transfer from a flux of particles produces the hydrostatic equilibrium. Using a slab geometry and requiring ionization, energy, and force balance at each point in the cloud, the physical conditions are determined as a function of position in the cloud. The calculation describes equally well the confinement by ram pressure of a cloud moving rapidly through a thin gas. An important result is that the initial relative velocity of the incident particles and the cloud must be at least 20,000 km/s in the absence of a magnetic field parallel to its surface.
