A study of mesoscale surface heat and moisture budgets and their relationship to airmass cumulus clouds observed in LANDSAT imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. The three budget analyses show a weak correspondence between LANDSAT cloud patterns and elements of the energy and moisture budgets. It was found that a little more energy is contributed by the ground to heat the air in cloudy areas. Improvements are warranted in the budget models and data coverage necessary to describe the environment. These models can serve as a basis for more complex models of surface air heat and moisture exchanges which would utilize readily available meteorological data on a mesoscale.

Nimbus earth resources observations

The potential for utilizing data gathered by Nimbus satellites to study the earth surface and its physical properties is illustrated. The Nimbus data applicable to investigations of the earth and its resources, and to the problems of resolution and cloud cover are described. Geological, hydrological, and oceanographic applications are discussed. Applications of the data to other fields, such as cartography, agriculture, forestry, and urban analysis are presented. Relevant information is also given on the Nimbus orbit and experiments; surface and atmospheric effects on HRIR and THIR radiation measurements; and noise problems in the AVCS, IDCS, HRIR, and THIR data.

The Nimbus image dissector camera system - An evaluation of its meteorological applications.

Brief description of the electronics and operation of the Nimbus image dissector camera system (IDCS). The geometry and distortions of the IDCS are compared to the conventional AVCS camera on board the operational ITOS and ESSA satellites. The unique scanning of the IDCS provides for little distortion of the image, making it feasible to use a strip grid for the IDCS received in real time by local APT stations. The dynamic range of the camera favors the white end (high reflectance) of the gray scale. Thus, the camera is good for detecting cloud structure and ice features through brightness changes. Examples of cloud features, ice, and snow-covered land are presented. Land features, on the other hand, show little contrast. The 2600 x 2600 km coverage by the IDCS is adequate for the early detection of weather systems which may affect the local area. An example of IDCS coverage obtained by an APT station in midlatitudes is presented.
