Utilizing Ontology Structures To Curate the DOE-NETL Carbon Storage Open Database

The specialized ontology for the Carbon Storage Open Database will enable more rapid assignment of appropriate symbology standards for visualization improvements, optimize topical and spatial tagging within keywords, and improve flexibility for utilization in existing data repositories such as EDX. This effort also aims to establish a foundation for utilization of ontologies for organization of other data related to geologic carbon storage in the future.

The Integration and Mapping of an Open-Source National Well Resource to Inform Geologic Carbon Storage Site Selection and Risk Prevention: The CO2-Locate Database

Geologic carbon storage (GCS) offers a way to capture and permanently store CO₂ from fossil fuel operations in underground geologic structures, aiding in the transition to a carbon-neutral energy economy. However, CO₂ injection sites can experience gas leakage through existing wells that penetrate storage reservoirs, making knowledge of well locations and characteristics crucial for permitting, infrastructure reusability, and risk assessment in GCS. Currently, public wellbore data from state, federal, and tribal entities are inconsistent and fragmented, with gaps and redundancies. To address this, the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) developed CO2-Locate, an open-source, geospatial database and online application. CO2-Locate integrates over 50 data sources from federal, state, and tribal entities, creating a standardized national well database. Funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the database is publicly available through the Energy Data eXchange (EDX) and viewable via the CO2-Locate web mapping application. This tool allows users to query, filter, and visualize well data to support GCS planning, permitting, and risk assessments. This presentation covers the methods used to create CO2-Locate, including data acquisition, processing, attribute mapping, and integration, much of which is automated for future updates. The web mapping application and its role in GCS site selection will also be discussed.

Curating Carbon Storage Data for Reuse: Enabling Research and Modeling from Earth’s Surface to Subsurface

The volume of public geologic carbon storage (GCS) data resources has continued to increase in recent years as the result of an increase in funding from government, industry, and academia towards national, basin, regional and field scale studies to ensure carbon capture and storage becomes a commercially viable operation. Despite the increasing volume of data, GCS data applied towards analyses such as geologic, cost, and risk modeling continues to be multi-sourced and often disparate in nature, published across government agencies, websites, data repositories and buried in derivative reports and documents. Much of the time preparing for an analysis and derivative product development is spent collecting, aggregating, transforming and preparing input data. There have been significant efforts within the DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory’s Carbon Storage Program to optimize multi-source, multi-scale subsurface geologic data curation and aggregation to support data discovery, interoperability, and reuse. Methods include the use of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science techniques. This talk will discuss the workflows, best practices, and processes developed to support the aggregation and curation of data through the whole system – surface to subsurface data - that support multi-scale, multi-purpose analysis for carbon storage research.

Estimating Lithium Fluxes from Produced Water: Marcellus Shale and Beyond

This talk summarizes the potential for critical minerals extraction from produced water and the current data constraints on making these evaluations. First, we present results from production simulations carried out using data from the Marcellus shale showing the lithium resource potential from this formation. Second, we broaden our estimations to show the critical mineral resource estimates from U.S. domestic shale operations. Lastly, we conclude with an overview of the NEWTS database and dashboard where we host the data used in our assessments.

WELLBASE - An Interactive Platform for Wellbore Material Assessment

This project seeks to build an open-source wellbore material data repository with adequate material performance and contextual data to support Geological Carbon Storage (GCS). By appropriately evaluating the data types as mentioned earlier made available by the WELLBASE tool, stakeholders can make more informed decisions regarding well selections, risk assessment, and economic analysis for geologic carbon storage projects. Advanced Natural Language Processing models and other custom python scripts will be deployed in an automated process to extract unstructured data from documents, reports, and web applications and subsequently parse to more usable formats. The processed data will then be integrated into a robust and comprehensive database architecture, optimizing data accessibility, and usability for analytical purposes. The final data products will be accessible through a user-friendly visualization platform that will allow users to query and visualize the data, as well as download data in usable formats.

CO2-Locate: A Living National Well Database

This is a presentation on NETL's CO2-Locate Database, an integrated resource of standardized public well records focusing on oil and gas well data acquired from federal, state, and tribal entities. This presentation covers updates on the resource, the integration method, and how CO2-Locate is being used as a baseline to support cross-cutting infrastructure projects.

Filling in Subsurface Storage Open Data Gaps - Updates to CCS Data Availability on EDX and EDX Spatial (FWP-1022465)

There is a need to preserve and efficiently access data resources to drive the next generation of research and development while ensuring compliance with DOE regulations. Over the last 10+ years, there has been ongoing efforts by the DOE Carbon Storage Program to ensure that there is effective data curation and preservation of DOE funded research leveraging the NETL-FECM data repository, the Energy Data eXchange (EDX). This talk presents updates about ongoing efforts to continue to support the mission of ensuring that carbon storage data is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable to the carbon storage stakeholder community through EDX and EDX Spatial. Presented at the NETL Carbon Management Review Meeting, Pittsburgh, 2024.

Deploying a Publicly Available and Living National Oil and Gas Well Geodatabase: CO2-Locate: A Dynamic Database & Tool

Emission mitigation and safe geologic carbon storage require an understanding of local wellbore infrastructure, yet well data are siloed across many entities. Addressing this challenge, the National Energy Technology Laboratory published CO2-Locate, an integrated and dynamic national wellbore geodatabase. CO2-Locate offers up to date well data spanning more than 40 federal, state, and tribal entities, as well as spatially summarized insights designed to support commercial, regulatory, and research communities as they strive to curb climate change through a national energy transition.

NEWTS State-Level Database Dashboard

The National Energy Water Treatment and Speciation (NEWTS) State-Level Database Dashboard enables quick visualization and exploration of energy-related wastewater data collected from state environmental agencies and research projects across the United States. The dashboard features a subset of the NEWTS Integrated Dataset (version 1.0), which was built to provide stakeholders with a unified and standardized database to support wastewater treatment and critical minerals exploration. The full NEWTS Integrated Dataset and citations for the original data resources can be found here: https://edx.netl.doe.gov/dataset/newts-integrated-dataset-version-1-0
