Distributed Coordination of Networked Microgrids for Voltage Support in Bulk Power Grids

The increasing deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) and microgrids (MGs) in power distribution systems has enabled the adjustment of reactive power consumption as seen at the substation, which can be used to provide voltage support for the bulk power system (BPS). Leveraging this new capability will provide greater resiliency to the power system as a whole. Here, the goal of this paper is to develop and compare three different algorithms, namely distributed optimal power flow, distributed consensus algorithm, and fully decentralized collaborative autonomy for unbalanced distribution systems for microgrid coordination. These algorithms use networked MGs to support the BPS voltage when a contingency at the bulk grid results in abnormally low voltages, which may be a precursor to voltage collapse. Our comparative analysis includes both qualitative and quantitative assessments of the three algorithms and a discussion of the trade-offs between the decentralized and distributed methods in normal and disrupted conditions. Each algorithm was evaluated on the modified IEEE 13-bus system and a real power distribution system at Chattanooga, Tennessee, that encompasses more than 4500 buses. Each algorithms excels differently and may be suited for different scenarios depending on the condition, operations, and priorities of the power and communication systems.

Game Theoretic Orchestration for Cooperation among Power Distribution System Applications

The evolving transformation with the proliferation of distributed energy resources and advanced metering, necessitates advanced distribution systems to integrate and orchestrate a large number of grid-edge devices while also serving multiple system-level objectives such as resilience, decarbonization, equity and other system mandates. The parallel deployment and control of resources towards achieving diverse objectives may lead to conflicts between applications that want to control overlapping sets of device setpoints, potentially leading to oscillatory behavior and suboptimal performance. This work aims at leveraging game theoretic framework to drive cooperative behavior among competitive applications. The work proposes a weighted-consensus based game design to facilitate conflict resolution through consensus-building iterations for modular platform. Simulation-based evaluation on a sample test system demonstrates the performance the proposed deconfliction strategy in resolving operational conflicts and achieving close-to-optimal trade off among the applications. Results also compare the proposed strategy with a distribution optimization approach and illustrate it effectiveness in diverse apps regardless of their design while also incentivizing apps with flexible design.

Development of a Distribution Optimal Power Flow Federate for Open-Source OEDI-SI Platform

Increasing numbers of distributed generators in the electric power distribution networks require developing a control strategy to optimize solutions in real time. Linearized optimal distribution flow development has seen growth and acceptance in the distribution systems literature for efficiently modeling the \glspl{opf} for distribution systems. This paper examines the implementation and integration procedure for linearized optimal distribution flow federate to \gls{oedisi} platform. Specifically, we discuss i) the usage of the \gls{oedisi} platform, ii) obtaining a tractable solution using developed \gls{opf} federate, and iii) validation of solutions and bench-marking the \gls{oedisi} platform with developed \gls{opf} federate using OpenDSS. In brief, we demonstrate how a general linearized optimal distribution flow federate can be developed and integrated with a co-simulation environment to mimic real-world examples. The efficacy of the proposed method is demonstrated using the IEEE 123-bus test system under different scenarios to obtain a tractable solution and compare its results.
