The effects of a visual fidelity criterion on the encoding of images

Shannon's rate-distortion function provides a potentially useful lower bound against which to compare the rate-versus-distortion performance of practical encoding-transmission systems. However, this bound is not applicable unless one can arrive at a numerically-valued measure of distortion which is in reasonable correspondence with the subjective evaluation of the observer or interpreter. We have attempted to investigate this choice of distortion measure for monochrome still images. This investigation has considered a class of distortion measures for which it is possible to simulate the optimum (in a rate-distortion sense) encoding. Such simulation was performed at a fixed rate for various measures in the class and the results compared subjectively by observers. For several choices of transmission rate and original images, one distortion measure was fairly consistently rated as yielding the most satisfactory appearing encoded images.

Source encoding of images for efficient transmission

A set of recursive rules which generate unitary transforms with a fast algorithm are presented. For each rule, simple relations give the number of elementary operations required by the fast algorithm. The common Fourier, Walsh-Hadamard, Slant, and Haar transforms are expressed with these rules. The framework developed allows the introduction of generalized transforms which include all common transforms in a large class of identical computation transforms. A systematic and unified view is provided for unitary transforms which have appeared in the literature and for a number of new transforms of potential interest. Generalization to complex and multidimensional unitary transforms is considered.

The problem of applying information theory to efficient image transmission.

The main ideas of Shannon's (1948, 1960) theory of source encoding with a fidelity constraint, more commonly known as rate distortion theory, are summarized. The theory was specifically intended to provide a theoretical basis for efficient transmission of information such as images. What the theory has to contribute to the problem is demonstrated. Difficulties that impeded application of the theory to image transmission, and current efforts to solve these difficulties are discussed.
