Global transport calculations with an equivalent barotropic system

Transport properties of the two-dimensional equations governing equivalent barotropic motion are investigated on the sphere. This system has ingredients such as forcing, equivalent depth, and thermal dissipation explicitly represented, and takes into account compression effects associated with vertical motion along isentropic surfaces. Horizontal transport properties of this system are investigated under adiabatic and diabatic conditions for different forms of dissipation, and over a range of resolutions. It is shown that forcing represetative of time-mean and amplified conditions at 10 mb leads to the behavior typical of observations at this level. The displacement of the polar night vortex and its distortion into a comma shape are evident, as is irreversible mixing under sufficiently strong forcing amplitude. It is shown that thermal dissipation influences the behavior significantly by inhibiting the amplification of unstable eddies and thereby the horizontal stirring of air.

Climate monitoring from space - Asynoptic sampling considerations

Asynoptic sampling for orbits and viewing geometries for climate monitoring from space is discussed. The basic physical processes pertinent to climate are reviewed. Two classes of variability are identified which challenge the information content of asynoptic sampling: irregular and diurnal variability. The limitations of nadir- and limb-viewing instruments, scanning radiometers, and wide FOV radiometers are discussed. The implications of variability for single and multiple orbital platforms are considered.

Deep circulations under simple classes of stratification

Deep circulations where the motion field is vertically aligned over one or more scale heights are studied under barotropic and equivalent barotropic stratifications. The study uses two-dimensional equations reduced from the three-dimensional primitive equations in spherical geometry. A mapping is established between the full primitive equations and general shallow water behavior and the correspondence between variables describing deep atmospheric motion and those of shallow water behavior is established.

Irregular and diurnal variability in asynoptic measurements of stratospheric trace species

The consequences of irregular and diurnal variability on the interpretation of asynoptic measurements of stratospheric trace species are explored. In particular, the fidelity with which the continuous behavior may be recovered from discrete asynoptic measurements is examined. Dynamically created tracer variability in the form of an advected space-time random process is discussed. Diagnostics such as power spectra and time-mean fields are derived asynoptically and compared with the true behavior. Diurnal variations of a photochemically active species are considered, describing variability in terms of a solar waveform which propagates through a latitudinal envelope. Several diagnostics of the behavior are derived asynoptically and compared with the true variability.

Vacillations induced by interference of stationary and traveling planetary waves

The interference pattern produced when a traveling planetary wave propagates over a stationary forced wave is explored, examining the interference signature in a variety of diagnostics. The wave field is first restricted to a diatomic spectrum consisting of two components: a single stationary wave and a single monochromatic traveling wave. A simple barotropic normal mode propagating over a simple stationary plane wave is considered, and closed form solutions are obtained. The wave fields are then restricted spatially, providing more realistic structures without sacrificing the advantages of an analytical solution. Both stationary and traveling wave fields are calculated numerically with the linearized Primitive Equations in a realistic basic state. The mean flow reaction to the fluctuating eddy forcing which results from interference is derived. Synoptic geopotential behavior corresponding to the combined wave and mean flow fields is presented, and the synoptic signature in potential vorticity on isentropic surfaces is examined.
