Oscillating stagnation point flow

A solution of the Navier-Stokes equations is given for an incompressible stagnation point flow whose magnitude oscillates in time about a constant, non-zero, value (an unsteady Hiemenz flow). Analytic approximations to the solution in the low and high frequency limits are given and compared with the results of numerical integrations. The application of these results to one aspect of the boundary layer receptivity problem is also discussed.

Free-stream disturbances, continuous eigenfunctions, boundary-layer instability and transition

A rational foundation is provided for the application of the linear stability theory of parallel shear flows to transition prediction. An explicit method is given for carrying out the necessary calculations. The expansions are shown to be complete. Sample calculations show that a typical boundary layer is very sensitive to vorticity disturbance in the inner boundary layer near the critical layer. Vorticity disturbances three or four boundary layer thicknesses above the boundary are nearly uncoupled from the boundary layer, in that the amplitudes of the discrete Tollmein-Schlichting waves are an extremely small fraction of the amplitude of the disturbance.

Study of a wideband probe

The design of an experiment to measure communication characteristics of wideband satellite-to-ground links is reported. Of special concern are the effects of rainstorms and atmospheric turbulence on path attenuation and phase fluctuation. Multi-tone and pulse probing are considered. A multi-tone technique which is a modification of ATS-5 and ATS-F hardware is recommended. Data extraction and data processing techniques and key hardware requirements for the experiment are reviewed.
