Sampling Particles In Hot Gas Plumes

Sampling darts and launching apparatus built to collect particles in vertical plume of hot gas. In original application, hot gas plume is rocket-engine exhaust during test firing. Dart passes made at various heights, depending on launch angle and launch-gas pressure. Adaptable to variety of terrestrial uses like research on particulate emissions of volcanoes or determining origin of building fire while still burning.

Laminar hypersonic flow over a compression using the HANA code

A hypersonic blunt-body code, HANA (Hypersonic Analysis for Aerobrakes), has been used to model the flow with compression corner angles of 15 and 24 degrees. A comparison is made between experimental flow data and numerical results of previous investigations which include surface pressures, skin friction coefficients, heat transfer rates, and flow field geometries.

Engineering methodology to estimate the aerodynamic heating to the base of the Aeroassist Flight Experiment vehicle

An engineering methodology has been developed to predict the convective heating and pressure environments to the base surfaces of the Aeroassist Flight Experiment (AFE) vehicle during its earth aeropass. Data obtained from prior flight vehicles, wind tunnel tests, CFD analysis of AFE, and simple one-dimensional isentropic flow expansion relationships along with standard aeroheating methods were employed. With the exception of one corner, the AFE base surfaces are immersed in separated flow and are, therefore, exposed to heating and pressure that are small compared to the front face of the aerobrake.
