Unraveling the Cooperative Activity of Hydrophilicity, Conductivity, and Interfacial Active Sites in Alginate‐CNT‐Cuo Self‐Standing Electrodes with Benchmark‐Close Activity for Alkaline Water Splitting

Designing electrocatalysts that excel in hydrogen and oxygen electrochemistry is crucial for sustainable hydrogen generation through electrochemical water splitting. This study presents a novel tricomponent catalyst composed of an alginate hydrogel (AL) infused with single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles. The catalyst exhibits benchmark-close bifunctional activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions. The aerophobic nature of the AL-gel facilitates superior bubble release from the electrode, while the inclusion of CNTs mitigates charge transfer resistance. Moreover, heterojunctions of CuO and CNTs create unique interfacial active sites, culminating in high electrocatalytic water-splitting activity. The structural rigidity of the composite permits its use as self-standing electrodes (SSE) without using substrates or binders, enabling a direct evaluation of its activity. The composite electrode demonstrates exceptional electrocatalytic HER activity in an alkaline solution, with onset potentials of 93 mV and moderate OER activity with an onset of 155 mV. Furthermore, a water electrolysis cell featuring the bifunctional SSE exhibits an open circuit voltage of 1.85 V at 100 mA.cm −2 , and only 8% efficiency loss after 100 h marking this a significant stride in developing self-standing nonprecious electrocatalysts with impressive catalytic performance.

Magnetic properties of intercalated quasi-2D Fe 3-x GeTe 2 van der Waals magnet

Among several well-known transition metal-based compounds, cleavable van der Waals (vdW) Fe 3-x GeTe 2 (FGT) magnet is a strong candidate for use in two-dimensional (2D) magnetic devices due to its strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, sizeable Curie temperature (T C ~154 K), and versatile magnetic character that is retained in the low-dimensional limit. While the T C remains far too low for practical applications, there has been a successful push toward improving it via external driving forces such as pressure, irradiation, and doping. Here we present experimental evidence of a room temperature (RT) ferromagnetic phase induced by the electrochemical intercalation of common tetrabutylammonium cations (TBA+) into quasi-2D FGT. We obtained Curie temperatures as high as 350 K with chemical and physical stability of the intercalated compound. The temperature-dependent Raman measurements, in combination with vdW-corrected ab initio calculations, suggest that charge transfer (electron doping) upon intercalation could lead to the observation of RT ferromagnetism. This work demonstrates that molecular intercalation is a viable route in realizing high-temperature vdW magnets in an inexpensive and reliable manner and has the potential to be extended to bilayer and few-layer vdW magnets.

Cylindrical C 96 Fullertubes: A Highly Active Metal‐Free O 2 ‐Reduction Electrocatalyst

Abstract A new isolation protocol was recently reported for highly purified metallic Fullertubes D 5h ‐C 90 , D 3d ‐C 96 , and D 5d ‐C 100, which exhibit unique electronic features. Here, we report the oxygen reduction electrocatalytic behavior of C 60 , C 70 (spheroidal fullerenes), and C 90 , C 96 , and C 100 (tubular fullerenes) using a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches. C 96 (a metal‐free catalyst) displayed remarkable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity, with an onset potential of 0.85 V and a halfway potential of 0.75 V, which are close to the state‐of‐the‐art Pt/C benchmark catalyst values. We achieved an excellent power density of 0.75 W cm −2 using C 96 as a modified cathode in a proton‐exchange membrane fuel cell, comparable to other recently reported efficient metal‐free catalysts. Combined band structure (experimentally calculated) and free‐energy (DFT) investigations show that both favorable energy‐level alignment active catalytic sites on the carbon cage are responsible for the superior activity of C 96 .
