STS science and applications payloads - An evolving perspective

The present investigation is mainly concerned with a reexamination of the Spacelab payload process. The candidate missions are considered in connection with discipline payloads or laboratories. Attention is given to the Space Biomedical Laboratory (SBL), the Space Plasma Lab (SPL), the Astronomy Research Laboratory (Astro), the Shuttle High Energy Astrophysics Laboratory (SHEAL), the Shuttle Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF), the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT), the Materials Sciences Laboratory (MLS), the Environmental Observations Mission (EOM), the Shuttle Radar Lab (SRL), the International Microgravity Laboratory (IML), and the Payload of Opportunity Carrier (POOC). The POOC is a low cost means of placing experiments aboard the Shuttle in the cargo bay.

Spacelab - Ten years of international cooperation

The history, current status, and future plans of the Spacelab program are reviewed, with a focus on the cooperative relationship between ESA and NASA. The initial decision to undertake the program and the three agreements signed to begin its implementation are examined, and the division of responsibilities and financial contributions is discussed insofar as it affected the management structure. Consideration is given to the major facilities, the 50-mission operational cycle, communications, the currently scheduled activities (through 1985), the prospective later uses, and the ten dedicated discipline laboratories. The importance of continuous mutual support during the planning and development phases is stressed. The program so far is considered a success, in terms of the goals set by the participants and in terms of the resolution of the problems inherent in international technological endeavors.

U.S. mission plans for Spacelab

Mission configurations, instrumentation, and objectives for Spacelab sorties on board the Shuttle beginning in Sept. 1983 are reviewed. The first two flights will serve to verify the Spacelab systems and will be followed by operational status, including the fifth flight, which will be a reimbursible venture. Scientific investigations in the fields of atmospheric physics and environmental observation, space plasma physics, astronomy and solar physics, materials processing, and life sciences will be performed using the habitable long module, instrument pallets, and/or an instrument igloo mounted in the payload bay. Instrumentation, such as the imaging spectrometric observatory, which was developed in the U.S., will originate in either the U.S. or Europe. Details of the first four Spacelab flights are presented, noting that the OSS-3 through -7 missions will feature the first time that entire NASA payloads have returned to space.

Mariner 9 - Image processing and products.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the system for the display, processing, and production of image-data products created to support the Mariner 9 Television Experiment. Of necessity, the system was large in order to respond to the needs of a large team of scientists with a broad scope of experimental objectives. The desire to generate processed data products as rapidly as possible, coupled with the complexities introduced by the nature of the vidicon camera, greatly increased the scale of the ground-image processing effort. This paper describes the systems that carried out the processes and delivered the products necessary for real-time and near-real-time analyses. References are made to the computer algorithms used for the different levels of decalibration and analysis.
