Ultra-compact and efficient heat exchanger for solar desalination with unprecedented scaling resistance

The objective is to design, prototype, and test a heat exchanger technology with an efficiency improvement of more than 150% compared to state-of-the-art heat exchanger technology (UA/volume), with significantly improved fouling/scaling resistance at elevated temperatures (>120°C) when compared to existing technology where scaling is a major performance-limiting issue, as well as at lower operating-temperatures (~63-110°C). We now report our overall progress on the project. An ultra-compact, efficient heat exchanger geometry has been developed that can maximize surface-area-to-volume ratio so that proposed target (UA/volume). Advanced manufacturing techniques, such additive manufacturing, have made it possible to create complex structures cost effectively. In addition to traditional manufacturing methods, additive manufacturing has been successfully used for the development of high-performance geometries. These methods allow the ability to create custom surface textures, which are deployed to dramatically control wettability and create energy-gradient surfaces. These techniques allow fouling/scaling nucleation to be spatially controlled, such that as the fouling layer grows it will be broken and removed by flow forces.

Enhanced Pool Boiling of Low-Pressure Refrigerants on Round Tubes- An Experimental Evaluation

Pool boiling heat transfer is one of the most effective heat transfer methos and crucial for several energy conversion processes such as electronic cooling, steam generation, water purification and thermal management. Enhancing boiling heat transfer around the tubes enables higher heat flux, which can improve the efficiency and lead to compact heat exchangers. Delaying the onset of critical heat flux (CHF) allows for higher CHFs and protects equipment during anomalous transient conditions. Growing interest in process intensification and delayed CHF has motivated the current study. An experimental approach has been deployed to investigate a potential technique to enhance the pool boiling performance around small diameter tubes by open cell metal foams. The findings for nucleate pool boiling of Novec HFE 7000 on the externally enhanced and smooth tubes are reported. The enhanced tube comprised of compressed aluminum foam brazed around. All the samples were horizontally oriented, and the experiments were performed under ambient pressure conditions. The heat transfer measurements for the smooth tubes were compared with several existing correlations and established the baseline. The preliminary results showed that the aluminum foam effectively enhanced the heat transfer coefficient and delayed the onset of critical heat flux. In addition, the pool boiling process around the round tube sample was visualized from both side and front views to comprehend the heat transfer mechanisms underlying substantial enhancement observed during experiments.

A Numerical Analysis of The Pool Boiling Process in Flooded Evaporators Using Different Refrigerants

The pool boiling process can be observed in several energy conversion processes including commercial and industrial refrigeration, industrial air-cooling operations, and power generation. The process becomes more involved when pool boiling in a tube bundle is considered. In the current study, a numerical model is developed to predict the key performance parameters of a flooded evaporator while considering a range of working fluids. A kettle reboiler configuration was considered, and a performance model was developed to account for boiling on individual tubes, merging of vapor bubbles, and movement under gravity. A volume of fluid (VOF) model was used to deal with the different phases in the simulation. Various fluids were considered in this study including HFE-7000, HFE-7300, and water. The trajectories of the bubbles were tracked, and the resulting information has been summarized in physical measurable quantities.
