Complete 6D tracking of a single electron in the IOTA ring

We present the results of the first experiments on 6-dimensional phase-space tracking of a single electron in a storage ring, using a linear multi-anode photomultiplier tube for simultaneously measuring transverse coordinates and arrival times of synchrotron-radiation pulses. This technology makes it possible to fully reconstruct turn-by-turn positions and momentums in all three planes for a single particle. Complete experimental particle tracking enables the first direct measurements of dynamical properties, including invariants, amplitude and energy dependence of tunes with exceptional precision, and chaotic behavior.

FAST Low-Energy Beamline Studies: Toward High-Peak 5D Brightness Beams for FAST-GREENS

The FAST beamline is the injector for the planned Gamma-Ray Electron ENhanced Source (GREENS) program, which aims to achieve the demonstration and first application of a high-efficiency, high-average-power free-electron laser at 515 nm. FAST-GREENS requires high 5D peak brightness; transverse normalized projected emittances of 3 mm-mrad and a peak current of 600 A are the minimum beam requirements for the FEL to reach the 10% efficiency goal. In this work, studies of the low-energy section of the FAST beamline are presented toward these ends, including preliminary measurements of beam compression and beam emittance. An effort toward developing a high-fidelity simulation model that could be later optimized for FAST-GREENS is presented.

Experimental 4D Tracking of a Single Electron in IOTA

We present the results of the first experiments on 4-dimensional phase-space tracking of a single electron in a storage ring, using a linear multi-anode photomultiplier tube for simultaneously measuring transverse coordinates and arrival times of synchrotron-radiation pulses. During the next few months, full 6D tracking will be implemented. This technology makes it possible to characterize the motion of a single particle, i.e. simultaneously tracking of amplitudes and phases for slow synchrotron oscillations and fast betatron oscillations. Complete tracking of a single particle enables the first direct measurements of dynamical properties, including invariants, amplitude-dependent tunes, and chaotic behavior.

Proof-of-Principle Studies on Betatron-Oscillation Phase Tracking of a Single Electron (BOPTSE) in IOTA Run 3

We present a description and preliminary results of the proof-of-principle studies on betatron-oscillation phase tracking of a single electron in the Fermilab IOTA storage ring during Run 3 (2021). We describe the general principles of the experiment, the optical diagnostics setup, the configuration of the ring, a chronology of the studies, the structure of the measured data, and results of the preliminary analysis of the collected data. It was observed that the coherence time of betatron oscillations exceeds 60,000 turns. The betatron tune of the single electron was accurately measured and compared with that of electron bunches. In addition, chromaticity was extracted from the combined analysis of synchrotron oscillations and betatron phase tracking.

Experimental Phase-Space Tracking of a Single Electron in a Storage Ring

This paper presents the results of the first ever experimental tracking of the betatron and synchrotron phases for a single electron in the Fermilab’s IOTA ring. The reported technology makes it is possible to fully track a single electron in a storage ring, which requires tracking of amplitudes and phases for both, slow synchrotron and fast betatron oscillations.

FAST-GREENS: A High Efficiency Free Electron Laser Driven by Superconducting RF Accelerator

In this paper we’ll describe the FAST-GREENS experimental program where a 4 m-long strongly tapered helical undulator with a seeded prebuncher is used in the high gain TESSA regime to convert a significant fraction (up to 10 %) of energy from the 240 MeV electron beam from the FAST linac to coherent 515 nm radiation. We’ll also discuss the longer term plans for the setup where by embedding the undulator in an optical cavity matched with the high repetition rate from the superconducting accelerator (3,9 MHz), a very high average power laser source can be obtained. Eventually, the laser pulses can be redirected onto the relativistic electrons to generate by inverse compton scattering a very high flux of circularly polarized gamma rays for polarized positron production.

Experimental 3-dimensional tracking of the dynamics of a single electron in the Fermilab Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA)

We present the results of experimental studies on the transverse and longitudinal dynamics of a single electron in the IOTA storage ring. IOTA is a flexible machine dedicated to beam physics experiments with electrons and protons. A method was developed to reliably inject and circulate a controlled number of electrons in the ring. A key beam diagnostic system is the set of sensitive high-resolution digital cameras for the detection of synchrotron light emitted by the electrons. With 60–130 electrons in the machine, we measured beam lifetime and derived an absolute calibration of the optical system. At exposure times of 0.5 s, the cameras were sensitive to individual electrons. Camera images were used to reconstruct the time evolution of oscillation amplitudes of a single electron in all 3 degrees of freedom. The evolution of amplitudes directly showed the interplay between synchrotron-radiation damping, quantum excitations, and scattering with the residual gas. From the distribution of measured single-electron oscillation amplitudes, we deduced transverse emittances, momentum spread, damping times, and beam energy. Estimates of residual-gas density and composition were calculated from the measured distributions of vertical scattering angles. Combining scattering and lifetime data, we also provide an estimate of the aperture of the ring. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the dynamics of a single electron are tracked in all three dimensions with digital cameras in a storage ring.

3D Tracking of a Single Electron in IOTA

High-resolution observations of single-particle dynamics have potential as a powerful tool in the diagnostics, tuning and design of storage rings. We are presenting the results of experiments with single electrons that were conducted at Fermilab’s IOTA ring to explore the feasibility of this approach. A set of sensitive, high-resolution digital cameras was used to detect the synchrotron radiation emitted by an electron, and the resulting images were used to reconstruct the time evolution of oscillation amplitudes in all three degrees of freedom. From the evolution of the oscillation amplitudes, we deduce transverse emittances, momentum spread, damping times, beam energy and estimated residual-gas density and composition. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the dynamics of a single particle in a storage ring has been tracked in all three dimensions. We discuss farther development of a single particle diagnostics that may allow reconstruction of its turn-by-turn coordinates over macroscopic periods of time facilitating ultra-precise lattice diagnostics and direct benchmarking of tracking codes.
