Nanoengineering of non-aqueous liquid electrolyte solutions for future lithium metal batteries

Research and development of non-aqueous electrolyte solutions are essential for practical advancement towards the production of high-energy lithium metal batteries (LMBs). An ideal LMB electrolyte solution should enable highly efficient, uniform and prolonged lithium metal plating and stripping, preserve the electrodes’ electro(chemo)mechanical properties and ensure compatibility with all cell components. However, despite extensive research efforts, scientists have yet to achieve an electrolyte design that meets these requirements simultaneously. Here, by examining the nanoengineering aspects of various non-aqueous electrolyte solution designs, we elucidate the understanding of the nanoscale physicochemical and electrochemical processes taking place in LMBs, which are mainly governed by the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of the electrolyte system. We also explore emerging research directions and propose an accelerated, iterative framework that integrates nanoengineering principles with machine learning, high-throughput computation and experimentation to facilitate the development of next-generation non-aqueous electrolyte solutions for practical LMBs.

Electrochemical conversion of methane to ethylene, olefins, and paraffins using metal-supported solid oxide cells

Electrochemical oxidative coupling of methane (E-OCM) with Sr 2 Fe 1·5 Mo 0·5 O 6–δ (SFM) catalyst is demonstrated with metal-supported solid oxide cells (MS-SOC). SFM anode and Pr 6 O 11 cathode catalysts are loaded into a porous symmetric-architecture cell by infiltration and firing. The most effective chelating agent (citric acid/ethyl glycol) and optimal firing/reducing temperatures (850 °C/750 °C) for the SFM catalyst precursor solution are selected and confirmed by cell testing. Operating temperature, cell voltage, and oxygen concentration at the cathode greatly affect the methane conversion rate and product selectivity by controlling the oxygen ion flow. CH 4 conversion of 85.8% is obtained, with C 2 H 4 , C 2 H 6 , and H 2 concentrations of 10.5%, 12.3%, and 25.6% at 800 °C, respectively, in the product exhaust gas. Reasonable stability of the current density and methane conversion is demonstrated during 200 h operation. Furthermore, this research demonstrates technical progress in catalyst and device development for the E-OCM reaction to synthesize valuable chemicals.

Tunable electrochromic behavior of titanium-based MXenes

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides, popular by the name MXenes, are a promising class of materials as they exhibit intriguing optical, optoelectronic and electrochemical properties. Taking advantage of their metallic conductivity and hydrophilicity, titanium carbide MXenes (Ti 3 C 2 T x and others) are used to fabricate solution processable transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) for the design of three-electrode electrochromic cells. However, the tunable electrochromic behavior of various titanium-based MXene compositions across the entire visible spectrum has not yet been demonstrated. Here, we investigate the intrinsic electrochromic properties of titanium-based MXenes, Ti 3 C 2 T x , Ti 3 CNT x , Ti 2 CT x , and Ti 1.6 Nb 0.4 CT x , where individual MXenes serve as a transparent conducting, electrochromic, and plasmonic material layer. Plasmonic extinction bands for Ti 3 C 2 T x , Ti 2 CT x and Ti 1.6 Nb 0.4 CT x are centered at 800, 550 and 480 nm, which are electrochemically tunable to 630, 470 and 410 nm, respectively, whereas Ti 3 CNT x shows a reversible change in transmittance in the wide visible range. Additionally, the switching rates of MXene electrodes with no additional transparent conductor electrodes are estimated and correlated with the respective electrical figure of merit values. This work demonstrates that MXene-based electrochromic cells are tunable in the entire visible spectrum and suggests the potential of the MXene family of materials in optoelectronic, plasmonic, and photonic applications, such as tunable visible optical filters and modulators, to name a few.
