Observation of Thermally Induced Piezomagnetic Switching in Cu 2 OSeO 3 Polymorph Synthesized under High-Pressure

A polymorph of Cu 2 OSeO 3 with the distorted kagome lattice is successfully obtained using the high-pressure synthesis technique (Cu 2 OSeO 3 -HP). The structural analysis using X-ray and neutron powder diffraction suggests that the tetrahedral Cu 2+ clusters [similar to those in Cu 2 OSeO 3 ambient-pressure phase (Cu 2 OSeO 3 -AP)] exist in Cu 2 OSeO 3 -HP but with three symmetry inequivalent sites. No structural change is observed between 1.5 K and the room temperature. The complex magnetic H-T phase diagram is established based on the temperature- and field-dependent magnetization data, indicating two distinct antiferromagnetic phases at low and intermediate temperatures, in addition to the higher-temperature spin-glass-like phase. The low temperature phase is identified by neutron powder diffraction refinements as a canted noncollinear antiferromagnetic order with a weak ferromagnetic component along the b-axis. Size of the refined ordered moment is ≈1.00(4) µ B in Cu 2 OSeO 3 -HP, indicating a large enhancement compared to that of Cu 2 OSeO 3 -AP (≈0.61 µ B ). By applying a uniaxial stress, finite enhancement of weak ferromagnetic component in the noncollinear antiferromagnetic phase in Cu 2 OSeO 3 -HP is observed, which is the clear evidence of the piezomagnetic effect. Interestingly, the sign of the induced magnetization changes on heating from the low-temperature to the intermediate-temperature phases, indicating a novel piezomagnetic switching effect in this compound.

Magnetic structure and magnetoelectric effect in the centrosymmetric antiferromagnet Cu 2 ( MoO 4 ) ( SeO 3 )

Magnetic properties of Cu 2 ⁢(MoO 4 )⁢(SeO 3 ), an S = $\frac{1}{2}$ centrosymmetric antiferromagnet (AFM), were investigated using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, neutron diffraction, and magnetoelectric (ME) measurements. Here, the magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a broad peak at ~50 K, followed by a phase transition into AFM order at T N = 23.6⁢(1) K. Above T N , a fit to the Curie-Weiss law gives a Curie-Weiss temperature Θ CW = -68⁢(1) K, suggesting the dominant AFM coupling. Neutron powder diffraction reveals that the C⁢u 2+ spins are aligned AFM along the c axis with weak noncollinearity under the magnetic space group of P2$^{'}_{1}$/c. The ME response indicates that a nondiagonal component of a ME tensor is active, supporting the simultaneous spatial and time reversal symmetry breaking under P2$^{'}_{1}$/c.

A New Inelastic Neutron Spectrometer HODACA

In this study, a new multiplex-type inelastic neutron scattering spectrometer, HOrizontally Defocusing Analyzer Concurrent data Acquisition spectrometer (HODACA), was recently developed and built at the C1-1 cold neutron beam port in the neutron source reactor JRR-3 at Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The spectrometer is suitable for dynamics measurements in the energy range of -1 meV ≲ ℏω ≲ 7 meV, catering to a broad array of research fields in physics and material science. HODACA combines 24 detectors and 132 pieces of analyzer crystals and has an estimated measurement efficiency that is 70 times greater than the existing conventional triple-axis spectrometer at the C1-1 beam port. The concept, design, specification, and results of commissioning experiments are described.

Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of the Breathing Kagome Ising Antiferromagnet Yb 3 Ni 11 Ge 4.63

We have investigated magnetic properties of the rare-earth based intermetallic compound Yb 3 Ni 11 Ge 4.63 (YNG), where Yb 3+ ions form a breathing-kagome lattice. Single-site 4f electron wavefunctions of the ground-state doublet are deduced from magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The Weiss temperatures are quite anisotropic as Θ a = -0.01(2) K (H ∥ a) and Θ c = -0.67(2) K (H ∥ c), indicating Ising-like spin–spin interactions dominating in this compound. Low-temperature neutron diffraction confirms absence of magnetic Bragg peaks down to 0.05 K, whereas enhancement of broad peaks below 0.8 K was observed, a signature of short-range spin correlations. Furthermore, competing interactions on the breathing-kagome lattice would suppress a magnetic long-range order in YNG.

Noncoplanar ferrimagnetism and local crystalline-electric-field anisotropy in the quasicrystal approximant Au 70 Si 17 Tb 13

Neutron scattering experiments have been performed to elucidate magnetic properties of the quasicrystal approximant Au 70 Si 17 Tb 13 , consisting of icosahedral spin clusters in a body-centered-cubic lattice. Bulk magnetic measurements performed on the single crystalline sample unambiguously confirm long-range ordering at T C = 11.6 ± 1 K. In contrast to the simple ferromagnetic response in the bulk measurements, single crystal neutron diffraction confirms a formation of intriguing non-collinear and non-coplanar magnetic order. The magnetic moment direction was found to be nearly tangential to the icosahedral cluster surface in the local mirror plane, which is quite similar to that recently found in the antiferromagnetic quasicrystal approximant Au 72 Al 14 Tb 14 . Inelastic neutron scattering on the powdered sample exhibits a very broad peak centered at hω ≃ 4 meV. The observed inelastic spectrum was explained by the crystalline-electric-field model taking account of the chemical disorder at the fractional Au/Si sites. The resulting averaged anisotropy axis for the crystalline-electric-field ground state is consistent with the ordered moment direction determined in the magnetic structure analysis, confirming that the non-coplanar magnetic order is stabilized by the local uniaxial anisotropy.
